Financial Specialist - Controller's Office

Overview

The Penn State College of Medicine, Controller's Office, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, seeks a Financial Specialist to support the Penn State Cancer Institute Research Team. This position provides strategic research financial guidance to leadership, the Research Manager, and Department Financial Analysts while managing post-award accounting for approximately 150 assigned clinical trials within a portfolio of 542 active clinical trials totaling approximately $48 million in funding
.

• Oversee post-award financial management of complex clinical trial accounts, review daily financial transactions, prepare and process journal entries, reconcile accounts, and ensure compliance with University, sponsor, and fiduciary policies.
• Utilize STAR, OnCore, Greenphire, and other University financial systems to ensure data accuracy and integrity; prepare monthly financial reports and resolve discrepancies promptly.
• Serve as the primary resource for complex financial questions related to Cancer Institute clinical trials; work with the Research Manager to resolve issues and improve post-award processes; help establish efficient workflows toward National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation.
• Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiencies, strengthen internal controls, and enhance financial stewardship across the research portfolio.
• Perform advanced financial analysis and reconciliation; interpret financial results; research and resolve accounting issues; develop procedures for compliant and efficient financial operations.
• Provide accounting support, guidance, and training to College of Medicine and Penn State Health financial staff; respond to inquiries; collaborate with the Funds Management Accountant to prepare data and supporting schedules for leadership.
• Independently manage a complex portfolio of clinical trial accounts with high accuracy, organization, customer service, and compliance with sponsor and University requirements.

• Bachelor’s Degree; 3+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary range: $65,508.00 - $94,980.00.
