Duties Description Advance your career in government finance, management, and public policy at the New York State Division of the Budget (DOB)! DOB develops, negotiates, and implements one of the largest government budgets in the country, which provides the fiscal roadmap for State programs, policies, and services.
We are seeking motivated analysts and critical thinkers to join our team. DOB analysts rely on their skills for creative problem solving, attention to detail, and comprehensive communication to respond to emerging challenges, identify and develop solutions, and ensure the fiscal health of the State.
The Economics and Revenue Unit is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Economic Analyst who understands economic principles, has hands-on experience in analytical techniques, and can translate complex data into clear economic and policy insights, both verbally and in writing. This role will develop, maintain, and refine economic models to forecast a wide range of economic indicators for the nation and the State.
The provided projections are utilized in the development of State tax revenue and expenditure estimates, debt capacity analysis, and other budgetary purposes, assisting in the overall budget process.
Economic Analysts at DOB are typically involved in:
* Supporting the U.S. macroeconomic forecast team to produce quarterly forecasts and related reports for the State Financial Plan and Annual Information Statement.
* Constructing econometric and predictive analytics models to forecast economic growth, employment, income, inflation, and related variables and quantify the impacts of changing economic trends and policy changes.
* Monitoring economic data releases, news articles, and research developments related to the U.S. and NYS economic dynamics.
* Identifying economic trends that may impact the State's long-term fiscal condition and authoring briefing materials for leadership awareness.
* Drafting analytical reports and recommendations to guide decision-making, including reviewing literature, synthesizing data, and illustrating trends and projections.
* Overseeing junior analysts by ensuring the quality and efficiency of their work and fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum qualifications for our title series can be found on our Salaries and Career Paths page. Candidates for this position should demonstrate the following:
* Graduate degree in economics or related field, with 3+ years of professional work experience in time series analysis, regression analysis, and/or forecasting models.
* Familiarity with economic data sources for the U.S. and New York State and hands-on experience in developing econometric models and working with large data sets.
* Fluency in statistical software packages (EViews and SAS preferred), Excel formulas and functions, PowerPoint presentations, and other Microsoft applications.
* Strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex economic concepts to non-technical audiences.
* Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and handle multiple competing assignments.
The ideal candidate will have analytic ability, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to learn. Key skills for this role include attention to detail, flexibility, and adaptability. Preference will be given to candidates with professional experience working with real-time data and now casting models.
All positions are located in Albany, NY, and weekly onsite work is required coupled with some remote work flexibility. Mandatory overtime may be required.
