The Underwriter is a full-time, hybrid role based in Uniondale, NY, with flexibility for some work-from-home arrangements. In this position, the Underwriter reviews and analyzes loan applications, credit reports, income documentation, and collateral to determine borrower eligibility and assess risk in accordance with company, investor, and regulatory guidelines. The role includes issuing conditional approvals, identifying documentation requirements, and working closely with processors, loan officers, and other team members to ensure files move efficiently from initial disclosures to closing.
The Underwriter is responsible for maintaining accurate records, adhering to compliance standards, and applying sound judgment to complex loan scenarios, including non-QM and specialty products. Day-to-day tasks also involve communicating underwriting decisions clearly, resolving conditions, and supporting a customer-centric lending experience.
- Strong expertise in mortgage underwriting practices, including conventional, FHA, VA, and non-QM loan products.
- Proficiency in reviewing and analyzing credit reports, income and asset documentation, and property appraisals.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and investor guidelines, as well as regulatory and compliance requirements.
- Experience working with LOS and mortgage-related software; ability to learn new systems quickly.
- Excellent analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with processors, loan officers, and other internal teams.
- Ability to manage multiple files and deadlines in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high-quality standards.
- Prior experience as a mortgage underwriter or in a similar lending role; DE/SAR or other relevant certifications are a plus.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field preferred.
