this Role
The Sustainable Investments (SI) program at CalPERS is seeking an Investment Officer II to focus primarily on investing in the energy transition and low carbon economy while advancing sustainability integration across the broader CalPERS portfolio. This position offers an opportunity to work on climate-related investment opportunities and contribute to the development of strategic investment initiatives in a rapidly evolving sector. The Investment Officer II will support due diligence processes for climate-related investment opportunities across private markets and engage in sourcing and market mapping activities to identify asset managers focused on climate solutions.
The role involves collaborating with the SI team to develop a comprehensive investment pipeline across private markets and supporting CalPERS’ broader sustainability integration efforts across its portfolio. The position includes responsibility for participating in the development and regular updates of sustainable investments strategic plans and research reports, typically focused on specific sectors, geographies, or trends. This includes sourcing, gathering, organizing, applying, and presenting data and research to support investment decision-making.
The position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three or more days onsite per week. Travel may be required to attend trainings and conferences. This is a permanent full-time position with eligibility for an annual incentive award of 0-10% of salary based on achievement against quantitative and qualitative measures. Employees who possess Charter Financial Analyst (CFA) certification may receive a 5% monthly base pay differential.
- Support the due diligence of climate-related investment opportunities across private markets
- Conduct sourcing and market mapping of asset managers focused on climate solutions across private markets
- Work with the SI team to develop an investment pipeline across private markets
- Support CalPERS’ sustainability integration efforts across the broader portfolio
- Participate in the development and regular update of sustainable investments strategic plans and research reports
- Focus research on specific sectors, geographies, or trends as assigned
- Conduct sourcing, gathering, organization, application, and presentation of data and research to support investment decisions
- Participate in trainings and conferences as required
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship now or in the future
- Must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated in the Classification Specification for Investment Officer II
- Must be able to qualify for a Surety Bond
- Must undergo a criminal history review process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting if not currently employed at CalPERS
