Job Summary

The Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) is a defined benefit (DB) pension plan that is dedicated to providing a secure retirement income to more than 478,000 members in Ontario’s healthcare sector. More than 700 employers across the province offer HOOPP to their employees. The Cross-Asset Thematic Investing team of Capital Markets invests across publicly traded assets such as equities, fixed income, commodities, and currencies.

Our investment approach is grounded in fundamental, top-down research on macroeconomic, geopolitical, and transformative forces, supported by data-driven analysis to identify important market themes, understand drivers of asset returns, and structure portfolio management decisions to capture investment opportunities across global markets. This internship offers a front-row seat to global markets and the investment process. You will gain hands-on experience in global macro and thematic research, portfolio management, and the development of tools that improve market screening, investment analysis and portfolio monitoring.

The role will involve extensive use of Python, Excel, AI tools, Bloomberg, and market data to support research and investment workflows.

What you will do
  • Help build and improve tools using Python, Excel, and AI technologies to support market research, portfolio analysis, and portfolio monitoring.
  • Research global macro and thematic developments across asset classes, analyzing economic, market, geopolitical, and structural trends and their implications for markets and portfolios.
  • Support portfolio analysis and management, including evaluating exposures, risk, performance, and the potential impact of different market scenarios and investment themes.
  • Develop and automate research and portfolio-monitoring processes to make investment workflows more efficient, scalable, and timely.
  • Work closely with portfolio managers to monitor portfolio performance, risk, market developments, and key investment themes.
  • Advance practical applications of AI tools for research, data analysis, information synthesis, workflow automation, and investment decision support.
  • Contribute to daily portfolio management activities and a variety of ad-hoc market and investment research projects.
What you will bring
  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program or in the 3rd/4th year of an Undergraduate program in Economics, Finance, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Strong academic performance, solid research skills, and a passion for problem solving.
  • Programming proficiency in Python, including experience working with data analysis and visualization, and advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience in using “AI tools for research, analysis, coding, or workflow automation is required.
  • Strong curiosity about global markets, macroeconomics, and thematic investing, with an interest in translating research and market developments into portfolio insights.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to combine qualitative judgment and quantitative analysis.
  • Well‑organized, with a high degree of initiative and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
