Senior Financial Analyst – Government of Alberta

Position: Financial Analyst – Senior

Client: Government of Alberta – Public Safety and Emergency Services (PSES)

Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Work Arrangement: Primarily Remote

Hours: 36.25 hours/week

Working Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:15 AM–4:30 PM Alberta Time

Expected Interview Dates: September 21–25, 2026

Contract: Approximately 1,790.75 hours, with potential extension of up to 18 months

Travel: Approximately 10%

Clearance: Enhanced / Level 2 security clearance required

Job Description

The Government of Alberta is seeking a Senior Financial Analyst to provide advanced accounting, financial analysis, reconciliation, reporting, and compliance support within a complex public-sector environment.

The successful candidate will work independently on complex financial activities, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information
. The role involves financial reporting, account reconciliation, journal entries, month-end and year-end activities, audit support, financial analysis, and interpretation of accounting policies and standards.

The Senior Financial Analyst will also identify financial risks and control gaps, resolve accounting and reporting issues, and contribute to process improvements and financial system enhancements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform complex account reconciliations, financial analysis, and journal entry preparation.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting, including month-end and year-end processes.
  • Review financial transactions for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Investigate and resolve accounting, reporting, and financial system issues.
  • Monitor and analyze accounts receivable, revenue, payroll-related transactions, and inter-unit accounts.
  • Prepare documentation, reconciliations, and working papers for internal and external audits.
  • Identify financial risks, control gaps, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Develop and maintain financial procedures, documentation, and reporting tools.
  • Provide technical advice regarding accounting standards, policies, legislation, and financial procedures.
  • Support implementation of financial system enhancements and process improvements.
  • Analyze, validate, reconcile, and troubleshoot complex financial datasets.
  • Maintain accurate accounting figures and financial records.
Requirements Mandatory Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience performing data analysis techniques to profile, validate, reconcile, troubleshoot, and analyze complex datasets.
  • 5+ years of advanced Microsoft Excel experience
    , including:
    • Pivot Tables
    • VLOOKUP
    • Data analysis and manipulation
  • 5+ years of experience applying accounting principles and accounting standards or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of experience with financial reporting
    , ensuring the accuracy and reliability of financial statements, along with strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • 4+ years of experience working with SharePoint Online
    , including working with spreadsheets accessed and modified by multiple users.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
  • CPA designation
    .
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration
    , or a related field.
  • 3+ years applying financial audit, financial controls, reconciliation, or financial systems governance principles, particularly in large-scale data migration, data conversion, or ERP implementation projects.
  • 4+ years of ERP experience
    , such as SAP.
  • 3+ years working with accounting systems, including:
    • Process creation
    • Budget management
    • Internal controls
  • 4+ years of experience accurately calculating, posting, correcting, and managing accounting figures and financial records.
Work Location & Conditions
  • This is a primarily remote position
    .
  • Work must be performed within Alberta.
  • The resource may occasionally be required to attend onsite meetings or work sessions based on business needs.
  • Any required onsite location is expected to be within approximately 3 hours of the resource's home
    .
  • Travel time and related expenses for such meetings within Alberta are at the contractor's cost.
  • The contractor is responsible for providing their own computer, software, desk, chair, printer, and other equipment.
  • Windows is preferred because of compatibility with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD).
  • Work will primarily involve Microsoft Teams, Excel, SharePoint, and Government of Alberta systems
