ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SPECIALIST 1-2

TANKS INSPECTION & COMPLIANCE ENFORCEMENT UNIT

1110 W. Washington Street, Phoenix, AZ 85007 (Waste Program Division)

    Level 1 $ 45‑$50K, Level 2 $ 50‑$60K
  • Grade: 20, 21

As an Environmental Science Specialist, you will conduct underground storage tank (UST) inspections in the Tanks Inspections, Compliance and Enforcement (TICE) Unit, including routine operational inspections and installation, modification, interior lining, and closure inspections.

The position is in‑office; remote work may be authorized in accordance with state policy.

Job Duties
  • Conduct routine operational inspections approximately 75% of the time field‑based.
  • Perform 25% field‑office duties preparing for inspections, completing reports, and other administrative functions.
  • Cross‑train for installation, modification, interior lining, and closure inspections.
  • Conduct compliance assistance site visits and outreach as needed.
  • Research and answer customer technical and regulatory questions.
  • Drive continuous improvement and problem‑solving activities within the section.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge
  • State and Federal environmental regulations, environmental engineering and technology principles.
  • Chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and their environmental transformations.
Skills
  • Professional communication, research, customer service/outreach, project management, advanced problem solving, and facilitation.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, technology use, attention to detail, quality assurance, and standard work adherence.
Abilities
  • Identify, analyze, and solve problems.
  • Interpret environmental rules and statutes, prioritize tasks, complete assignments by deadlines, synthesize feedback, adjust plans, develop technical documentation, and report recommendations to senior staff.
Selective Preferences
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental/chemical engineering, earth science, environmental management/studies, sustainability, or related field.
  • Level 1:
    Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field.
  • Level 2:
    Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field and 2 years of experience (Masters may substitute for 2 years).
