Hillsboro Youth Advisory Council Intern

Based on the department needs this position may incorporate a hybrid schedule with remote work - selected candidate must be residing in Oregon by the time of hire. Compensation — Varies based on education level Enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in a college or university: $20.16/hour Enrolled as a junior or senior in a college or university: $21.80/hour Enrolled in a graduate program: $25.51/hour The Hillsboro Youth Advisory Council is a dynamic group of high school students committed to representing the youth voice in the local government.

The Council presents to City Council on issues affecting young people, plans community events, and engages in various civic activities to build their professional and leadership skills. The Hillsboro Youth Advisory Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month and attends the National League of Cities Conference each year. The Youth Advisory Council Intern will support the Youth Advisory Council in advancing its goals, initiatives, and community impact efforts for the  school year.

This role offers a unique opportunity for individuals interested in local government, civic engagement, youth development, and curriculum planning to gain hands on experience in public administration, event coordination, leadership development, and community outreach. This position will assist with planning and supporting bi monthly YAC meetings, coordinating special projects and events, supporting communication and outreach efforts, conducting research, and helping develop engaging educational and leadership focused content for students.

The position also provides exposure to City operations and opportunities to collaborate with City staff, community partners, and youth leaders on initiatives that positively impact the Hillsboro community. The YAC Intern position will operate in a hybrid format with a combination of remote and in person work. Attendance at in person YAC related activities and events is expected, including bi monthly YAC meetings, community engagement events, and travel opportunities such as the National League of Cities Conference, when applicable.

The ideal Candidate:

  • Is passionate about youth engagement, community service, and local government. Successful candidates are organized, dependable, and proactive individuals who are comfortable balancing multiple projects and responsibilities in a collaborative and fast paced environment.
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills and feel comfortable engaging with students, City staff, community members, and elected officials in a professional and approachable manner.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Has open communication is especially important in this role, including regularly looping in the supervisor, providing updates, asking questions when clarification is needed, and ensuring alignment with YAC program goals, expectations, and City priorities.
  • Demonstrates a genuine interest in supporting and mentoring students in their personal, academic, and leadership development. They should be approachable, encouraging, and capable of helping students navigate projects, programs, and collaborative initiatives in a supportive and professional manner.
  • Has a strong willingness to learn, receive feedback, and continuously develop new skills is essential, particularly in areas related to local government, youth engagement, community outreach, and program coordination.
  • Previous Youth Advisory Council experience is preferred but not required.

The position may also involve assisting with student supervision and chaperoning responsibilities during meetings, conferences, field trips, and community events. Candidates should be prepared to work in dynamic and fast paced environments, exercise sound judgment, remain calm under pressure, and respond professionally to unexpected or stressful situations while prioritizing student safety and program success.
