THE POSITION
As a Taxpayer Assistance Technician for the Bureau of Collections and Taxpayer Services, you will be the helpful, knowledgeable voice people rely on for tax support. This role brings variety, teamwork, and meaningful daily interactions with the public. DESCRIPTION OF WORKThis role provides direct assistance to taxpayers and their representatives and provides clerical support in the office as needed. As a Taxpayer Assistance Technician, you will perform the following duties:
- Account Analysis:
Research and review taxpayer accounts and records in the Department’s system to answer inquiries - Filing Guidance:
Answer phone calls and correspondence to assist taxpayers and their representatives with completing tax returns, reports, and other forms - Tax Explanations:
Provide advice on the application of tax laws, rules, regulations, policies or procedures; verify and explain tax liability, penalty, interest, and how these amounts are determined - Document Processing:
Request, gather, and review tax documentation in order to correctly calculate and adjust taxpayer accounts - Training Support:
Help train seasonal and volunteer tax personnel in personal income tax and the property tax/rent rebate program; deliver tax presentations in the private sector

Work Schedule and Additional Information:- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
- Telework:
You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, ad hoc. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $46,827.00 (before taxes). - You will receive further communication regarding this position via email. - Three years of experience in reviewing tax documents and making taxpayer liability decision and applying tax laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures; or
- Three years of experience in the collection of taxes; or
- Any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
- This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to the provisions of IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075) which requires you to pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment. Under Pub 1075, acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check;
a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.
