We are seeking an experienced Surgical Oncology Physician Coder to code a wide variety of accounts. The ideal candidate will have at least 1 year of coding experience in Surgical Oncology, be currently certified through AAPC or AHIMA (a level above CPC-A), and be comfortable with heavy E/M coding.
Position SummaryEvaluates medical records, provides clinical and surgical abstraction, and assigns appropriate clinical diagnosis and procedure codes in accordance with nationally recognized coding guidelines.
Responsibilities- Analyze medical information from records and accurately code diagnostic and procedural information in accordance with national coding guidelines and reimbursement requirements.
- Consult with medical providers to clarify missing or inadequate record information and to determine appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes.
- Provide thorough, timely, and accurate coding in accordance with departmental productivity and quality standards.
- Code ICD‑CM and CPT‑4 for accurate APC assignment; address NCCI edits as appropriate.
- Abstract clinical diagnoses, procedure codes, and other pertinent information into electronic medical records, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
- Refer inconsistent or incomplete documentation to coding quality analysts, supervisors, or the appropriate department.
- Ensure compliance with coding rules and regulations for state Medicaid plans, CMS, OIG, and HCFA, as well as company and professional standards.
- Compile daily and monthly reports as assigned; tabulate data for research or analysis purposes.
- Work independently under regular supervision and use specialized knowledge for accurate code assignment.
- Minimum 1 year of recent experience in E/M Surgical Oncology coding (documented in resume).
- Current certification through AAPC or AHIMA at or above the CPC-A level.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; or an Associate’s degree in a related health‑care field.
- At least 6 months of professional coding experience in health‑care settings.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ICD and CPT coding principles as recommended by AHIMA or AAPC competencies.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote setting using common office programs and coding software.
- Preferred:
Specialty certification in Surgical Oncology.
- Specialty Certification in Surgical Oncology.
- Additional related education or experience.
