Medical Collections Specialist (Workers Compensation)

This position will work specifically with workers' compensation, motor vehicle, and personal injuries collections. Direct experience is highly preferred. The ideal candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment. The position is based at the corporate office located in Westchester, IL, near Oak Brook. It is a full‑time, 40‑hour per week, Monday through Friday position with a flexible schedule.
Candidates will have the opportunity to work remote after training has been completed onsite.
- Answer incoming calls into the call center and assist patients/insurance companies with account questions in a courteous and timely manner. Ensure patients/insurance companies understand the billing statements and processes to provide the highest level of customer care.
- Facilitate follow‑up communications with insurance companies and patients regarding claim/payment status through practice management system and reporting tools.
- Document all actions and maintain a permanent record of patient accounts to ensure sufficient audit trail.
- Review and adjust balances according to fee schedules and management/MD requests, and verify that claims have been processed correctly by the insurance plan.
- Research and obtain necessary documentation for insurance companies to process outstanding claims.
- Identify denials and appeal with proper documentation within a timely manner to secure payment.
- Answer patients' questions regarding statements and insurance coverage. Telephone or email payers for follow‑up on outstanding claims.
- Respond and handle attorney requests for bills as well as any questions regarding balances. Negotiate settlements as cases close.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in workers’ compensation, motor vehicle and personal injuries; preferably in an orthopedic practice.
- Understanding claims procedures.
- Experience with patient accounting systems – Athena preferred.
- Experience communicating and dealing with attorneys helpful.
- Medical terminology required for accurate claims processing.
$22.00 – $25.00 per hour.
