Overview
Ohio State Wexner Medical Center is hiring for a Medical Coder/Records Technician role. This position codes inpatient medical records to facilitate reimbursement and data collection for OSU Medical Center and The James Cancer Hospital. ICD-10-CM/PCS codes are assigned for diagnoses and procedures for inpatients treated within the OSU Health System. Medical record abstract data is reviewed for accuracy in EPIC/IHIS before completing the chart.
This position codes inpatient records and related documents at the conclusion of the patient’s visit, selecting appropriate admitting diagnosis, principal and secondary diagnoses, and sequencing diagnoses and procedures.
- Code medical records and related documents after patient visits, ensuring correct admitting diagnoses, principal and secondary diagnoses, and sequencing.
- Ensure codes flow from Encoder Software to the EPIC/IHIS Resolute Billing system and assign MS-DRG and APR-DRG for hospital reimbursement, research, and planning.
- Maintain productivity standards and approved work schedule.
- Minimum completion of a CAHIIM-approved coding certificate program or HIMT program or equivalent education & experience
- Demonstrated coding proficiency through satisfactory completion of OSUWMC's coding test
- Familiarity or experience with Computer Assisted Coding and/or automated encoder
- Inpatient Credential: RHIT, RHIA, or CCS by AHIMA, or Exception Coding Apprenticeship
- Candidates hired from the Coding Apprenticeship Program must obtain one of the approved credentials within six months of hire
- Candidates hired without a credential will not receive credit in their initial salary quote for the credential
- Upon obtaining an approved credential, eligible for a 2.5% pay increase subject to notifying the manager
- Failure to obtain the credential within six months will result in termination
- Maintain the credential by completing continuing education activities; failure to maintain may lead to corrective action up to termination
- Minimum of two years’ academic medicine inpatient coding experience
- Maintain credential through continuing education; failure to maintain can lead to corrective action up to termination
- Attend coding meetings and education sessions; maintain a minimum score of 90% on quarterly coding assessments
