Job Description Summary

The Coding Supervisor oversees inpatient and outpatient hospital coding operations, ensuring accurate and compliant assignment of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, or HCPCS codes in accordance with official guidelines, payer regulations, and organizational policies. This role leads and supports coding staff through effective communication, performance management, audits, and ongoing feedback to ensure high-quality and timely production.

This position also manages staff lifecycle activities including hiring, coaching, evaluations, and corrective actions, while promoting professional development and accountability. The role operates primarily in a remote environment with occasional on-site requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts regular team meetings. Participates in external and revenue cycle meetings with departments/faculty/physician. Participate in internal department meetings. Meet with employees in quarterly rounding sessions.

  • Ensure accurate assignment if ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient and outpatient encounters.

  • Monitor DRG Validation and sequencing of diagnoses and procedures as required.

  • Ensure adherence to official coding guidelines and facility policies.

  • Ensure open 2-way communication accessibility of coding staff. Assists with coding/billing/collection/reimbursement questions and problems related to hospital coding as needed.

  • Collaborate with CDI teams to address documentation gaps as needed.

  • Interviews, selects, hires, and terminates staff. Conducts performance evaluations, carries out disciplinary actions. Plans, conducts, and participates in employee team and division meetings to assure adequate communication on management directives and policy and procedure updates. Provides guidance to Care Team Members on interpersonal behavior and professional development. Sets clear goals and expectations for staff; follows CTM goals; provides regular feedback; addresses performance issues promptly;

    fosters learning and development; provides recognition of staff and team accomplishments.

  • Key stakeholder in organizational Pillar Goals and other Organizational established metrics.

  • Organize work assignments both from system and personnel perspectives. Oversee CTM’s work performance, including audits, to ensure both quantity and quality production efforts.

Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in HIM/ Healthcare Administration or Equivalent

    Work Experience:

    6 years progressive work experience in Coding in a healthcare setting, preferably within a coding or HIM department.

  • Expertise in ICD-10 CM/PCS, HCPCS, and CPT-4 coding systems.

  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party payer regulations related to coding guidelines.

  • Ability to work closely with physicians and other providers to ensure accurate documentation and coding for the system.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present findings and recommendations effectively.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in curriculum development or instructional design.

  • Expert use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Visio

Work Environment

This position operates primarily in a remote office environment but may be required to come on-site occasionally. The Coding Supervisor may be required to sit for extended periods and use computer equipment and software extensively.
