As a Hospital Based Patient Advocate
, you play a vital role in guiding uninsured hospital patients through the complex landscape of medical and disability assistance. This onsite, hospital‑based role places you at the heart of patient financial advocacy—meeting individuals face‑to‑face, right in their hospital rooms, to guide them through the process of identifying eligibility and applying for financial assistance. Your presence and empathy make a real difference during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to connect uninsured hospital patients to programs that will cover their medical expenses. As a Patient Advocate, you will play a critical role in assisting uninsured hospital patients by evaluating their eligibility for various federal, state, and county medical or disability assistance programs through bed‑side visits and in‑person interactions. Your primary objective will be to guide patients face‑to‑face through the application process, ensuring thorough completion and follow‑up.

This role is crucial in ensuring that uninsured patients are promptly identified and assisted, with the goal of meeting our benchmark that 98% of patients are screened at bedside.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Screen uninsured hospital patients at bedside to determine viability for federal, state, and/or county medical or disability assistance.
  • Complete the appropriate applications and follow through until approved.
  • Document all cases accurately and timely in both Elevate PFS and hospital systems.
  • Provide exceptional customer service at all times.
  • Maintain assigned work queue of patient accounts.
  • Collaborate in person and through written or verbal correspondence with hospital staff, case managers, social workers, and financial counselors.
  • Answer incoming telephone calls, make outbound calls, and track all paperwork for enrollment and renewal of prospective Medicaid patients.
  • Maintain structured and timely contact with applicants and the responsible government agency by phone whenever possible or as structured via the daily work queue.
  • Assist applicants with gathering additional reports or records, meeting appointment dates and times, and arranging transportation if warranted.
  • Conduct in‑person community visits as needed to acquire documentation.
  • Inform clients of approvals or denials of coverage in a timely manner as per protocols.
  • Attend required training to stay informed about rules and regulations related to governmental programs, and apply updated knowledge to cases.
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications And Requirements
  • Some college coursework preferred.
  • Prior hospital experience preferred.
  • Adaptable to constantly changing processes, computer systems, and government programs.
  • Professional experience working with state and federal programs.
  • Critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to maneuver throughout the hospital and patients’ rooms during scheduled shifts.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with emphasis on Excel and Outlook.
  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing to a variety of individuals.
  • Ability to multitask to meet performance metrics while functioning in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Hospital‑Based Patient Advocates are expected to dress in accordance with client dress code.
