Patient Revenue Management OrganizationWe are the fully integrated, centralized revenue cycle organization that supports the entire health system in streamlining the revenue cycle, including scheduling, registration, coding, billing, and other essential revenue functions for Duke Health. This position is 100% remote; all Duke University remote workers must reside in North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, or Texas.

Occ SummaryThe Medical Records Coder II is a certified coder who coordinates and reviews the work of subordinate employees and assists with training and continuing education programs. The role involves coding medical records using ICD‑10‑CM and CPT‑4 conventions, reviewing records for diagnostic and procedural specificity, and ensuring optimal reimbursement.
Work Performed- Review complex medical records and accurately code diagnoses and procedures using ICD‑10‑CM and CPT coding conventions.
- Coordinate and review the work of designated employees and ensure quality and quantity of work through regular audits.
- Assist with research, development, and presentation of continuing education programs in specialized areas.
- Sequence diagnoses and procedures using coding guidelines and ensure accurate DRG/APC assignment.
- Abstract and compile data for reimbursement, consult with physicians on coding practices, and communicate with nursing and ancillary services for documentation.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, and surgical techniques through ongoing education.
- Assist with special projects as required and perform other related duties incidental to the work described.
- Advanced ICD‑10‑CM & CPT‑4 coding conventions
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology

- Coding software familiarity
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Data entry/CRT proficiency
- Education: High school diploma required.
- Experience: RHIA certification—no experience required; RHIT certification—no experience required; CCS certification—one year of coding experience required; CPC or HCS‑D certification—two years of coding experience required.
- Certifications: Must hold one of the following active/current certifications:
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) Hospital Coding, Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Hospital Coding, Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Hospital Coding, Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Homecare Coding, or Homecare Coding Specialist‑Diagnosis (HCS‑D) Homecare Coding.
