Remote Overnight Mental Health Counselor

Established in 1974, the Helpline Center operates 24/7, offering critical support services to individuals across South Dakota. Each year, the organization connects thousands of community members with essential resources, provides crisis response to individuals with thoughts of suicide, and supports families navigating loss. The Helpline Center’s mission is to make lives better by delivering support, hope, and connections anytime they are needed.

Core services include the 211 Helpline, Suicide & Crisis Support, and Volunteer Connections.

This is a full-time remote position for a Remote Overnight 988 Mental Health Counselor. The counselor will provide emergency emotional support, crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and resource referrals to individuals in need. Responsibilities include responding to incoming calls and messages promptly, actively listening to participants’ concerns, using evidence-based practices to assess risks, and creating appropriate safety or treatment plans as needed while maintaining accurate documentation of interactions.

• Expertise in Mental Health, Psychology, and Relationship Counseling
• Skills in Treatment Planning and Case Management
• Ability to provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention using best clinical practices
• Strong active listening, empathy, and communication skills
• Experience supporting individuals in high-stress or vulnerable situations
• Relevant credentials such as a degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field (advanced certifications are a plus)
• Experience working in mental health or crisis intervention services is preferred
• Technical proficiency in using remote communication tools and documentation software
• Adaptability to work during overnight hours and in a remote setting
