A Medical Assistant is a versatile healthcare professional who provides administrative and clinical support in medical offices, clinics, and hospitals. They serve as a critical link between patients and physicians, ensuring efficient operation of healthcare facilities.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties- Take and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature)
- Prepare patients for examinations
- Assist physicians during examinations and procedures
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens
- Perform basic laboratory tests
- Administer medications as directed by physicians
- Change dressings and remove sutures
- Instruct patients about medication and special diets
- Schedule appointments and manage patient flow
- Update and maintain patient medical records
- Handle correspondence and billing
- Code and complete insurance forms
- Coordinate laboratory services and referrals
- Manage medical supply inventory
- Answer telephones and address patient inquiries
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program (preferred)
- Certification from AAMA, AMT, NHA, or other recognized organization (often preferred)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent certification (preferred or required depending on facility)
- Current CPR certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- 1-2 years of experience in a healthcare setting (preferred for most positions)
- New graduates may be considered with strong clinical training experience
- Basic computer skills and electronic health record experience
- Working knowledge of medical terminology
- Understanding of anatomy and physiology
- Proficiency in taking vital signs and performing basic clinical procedures
- Ability to operate standard medical equipment (EKG machines, autoclaves, etc.)
- Experience with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems

- Knowledge of OSHA standards and safety protocols
