Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Clinical Supervisor for Student Advocacy and Trauma Support (SATS), the Staff Counselor provides immediate and ongoing behavioral health services to survivors of sexual assault, domestic and dating violence, and stalking, as well as victims of bias‑related crime or discrimination. The incumbent also provides advocacy services, emergency coverage/crisis intervention, and consultation with students, parents, faculty and staff and develops, implements, and evaluates SATS and mental‑health related educational programming.

  • Provides direct counseling services to clients affected by sexual assault, domestic and dating violence, and/or stalking as a priority using various treatment models, including trauma‑informed/trauma‑focused and brief‑solution‑focused models.
  • Provides direct counseling services to clients affected by crimes or discrimination based on bias related to gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, race, ethnic origin, or religion, as needed.
  • Provides same‑day crisis assessment and intake assessment to determine appropriate treatment needs and clinical disposition.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation of all clinical activities and sessions.
  • Works collaboratively with the SATS Program Coordinator and others to promote community awareness and communicate the availability of services.
  • Participates in continuing education and trainings needed to maintain licensure.
  • Attends trauma‑informed and trauma‑focused trainings.

Note:

This position works from Aug. 16 to May 15 each year (0.75 FTE).

Minimum And Additional Requirements
  • Master’s degree in counseling, counseling psychology, social work or closely related field.
  • Must have passed the required licensing exam for clinical practice before date of hire.
  • Licensed to practice independently or license‑eligible in South Carolina as an LPC, LISW‑CP, or LMFT within two years of hire date (arranging supervision is the licensee’s responsibility).
  • Training in sexual assault response, crisis intervention, and victim support.
  • Experience working with survivors of sexual assault, domestic and dating violence.
  • Multicultural competence and ability to build meaningful rapport with people regardless of gender, age, race, culture, sexual preference, or gender identity.
  • Ability to provide culturally sensitive behavioral health services (individual, couples and group) to students who are victims of sexual assault, domestic and dating violence, stalking, or crimes or discrimination motivated by bias against gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, race, ethnic origin, or religion.
  • Ability to provide emergency coverage and crisis intervention.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective organizational skills.
  • Sufficient technical ability to master software required to perform job duties.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and parents.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Unrestricted LISW‑CP, LMFT, LPC, or equivalent license (i.e., able to work independently, without supervision from a licensed supervisor) without current, past, or pending disciplinary action.
  • Experience working with college‑aged clients.
  • Experience working with survivors of stalking, as well as victims of bias crimes or discrimination.

License/Certification:
Candidate must be licensed or license eligible in SC as an LPC, LISW‑CP, or LMFT within two years of hire date required.

Annual Salary/Hiring Range: $45,803 (0.75 FTE; 8/16-5/15 each year).

Telecommuting:
Employees are not eligible for telecommuting/remote work during their 12‑month probationary period. After that time, certain positions may be eligible for telecommuting/remote work at the discretion of the supervisor and in accordance with Winthrop policies.
