Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm - Remote (prefer candidates reside in OH/PA).

Summary

The Health Information Management Outpatient Coding Lead Specialist facilitates reimbursement and data collection for Akron Children's Hospital Ambulatory Surgery and Observation services. ICD-10-CM and CPT codes are assigned for the diagnosis and procedures on all outpatient accounts. Medical record abstract data is reviewed for accuracy in Epic before the chart is completed.

Responsibilities
  • Create educational teams and topics to maintain internal coding consistency.
  • Research changes or updates to coding procedures and requirements.
  • Assist the manager with training and educating new or existing coding specialists.
  • Provide cross‑training when necessary.
  • Assist with auditing coded records.
  • Answer ongoing coder questions, list problems or concerns, and offer suggestions or solutions.
  • Provide coding manager with input from medical record specialists regarding performance reviews.
  • Collaborate with Revenue Cycle, Quality Service, and Finance Departments to optimize reimbursement.
  • Review abstracted data elements such as patient information, dates of service, point of origin, discharge disposition, and attending provider; make necessary changes in EPIC.
  • Review operative reports, progress notes, dictated reports, pathology reports, cytology reports, x‑ray reports, laboratory reports, and other medical record information via EPIC.
  • Abstract clinical data from these records and perform data entry into clinical/statistical databases.
  • Other duties as required.
Technical Expertise
  • Experience in health information management is required.
  • Experience in ICD-10-CM, CPT coding, and classification systems is required.
  • Minimum two years of coding experience.
  • Experience working with all levels within an organization is preferred.
  • Experience in healthcare is preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required; 3M software is preferred.
Education And Experience
  • Associate degree in health information or related field preferred; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • AHIMA or AAPC certification is required.
  • Minimum of two years relevant experience; three years preferred.
  • No supervisory experience required.
