Job Summary

The Certified Pharmacy Technician I-IV assists the pharmacist(s) in storing, preparing, distributing, reconciling, and charging all medications and other healthcare products to the appropriate areas serviced by the pharmacy. The technician works under the direct supervision of the pharmacist and will only perform activities that are in compliance with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations.

Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities
  • Accurately and efficiently prepares and labels medications, obtaining a final check from the pharmacist before dispensing, delivering, or releasing any medication or compounded medication.
  • Tracks prescription orders via pharmacy programs to ensure correct delivery information is given to patients.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Monitors and ensures adequate inventory is maintained in all areas.
  • Communicates when products need to be reordered, manages drug supplies cost‑effectively, and identifies opportunities to minimize waste.
  • Ensures medication management processes meet all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Performs routine tasks using existing policies, with conceptual knowledge of theories, practices, and procedures within pharmacy, typically acquired through technical training.
  • Develops competency by performing structured work assignments and receiving instruction, guidance, and direction from others, continually building knowledge of the organization and pharmacy processes.
  • Performs a range of straightforward assignments related to the discipline, using prescribed guidelines and policies to analyze and resolve problems with a moderate level of guidance.
  • Inpatient & Oncology Pharmacy
  • Accurately prepares IVs utilizing aseptic technique under the supervision of a pharmacist, in accordance with USP Guidelines and Texas State Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations.
  • Assists in maintaining unit dose readiness of bulk products and verifies barcode scan accuracy.
  • Makes timely rounds and accurately transports medications and supplies to assigned areas.
  • Replenishes stock in the automated dispensing system, crash cart trays, and specialty medication boxes accurately and timely.
  • Performs and documents quality control activities, including monthly medication storage area inspections, and completes required log sheets.
  • Performs daily Automated Dispensing System (ADS) routines (outdates, discrepancy resolution, loading/unloading, etc.) and troubleshoots all ADS issues (pocket/drawer failures, temperatures out of range, interface issues, etc.).
  • Outpatient Pharmacy
  • Assists in triaging and filling prescriptions while maintaining productivity standards.
  • Performs cashier functions and processes daily and ad‑hoc reports.
  • Verifies and updates patient demographic, insurance, and prescription information in the computer system.
  • Assists patients by providing excellent customer service directly and via telephone.
  • Uses associated hardware and software to complete pharmaceutical transactions and associated duties.
  • Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    • Current registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
    • National certification through National Health career Association (NHA) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
    • Graduate from a pharmacy technology program.
    • Sterile Compounding Certification accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).
