Position: Medical Technician (Relief/On-Call)

Overview

Metro’s Oregon Convention Center Department is seeking Medical Technicians to support event safety and guests at the Oregon Convention Center and other venues. The role is 24/7, working alongside nurses, paramedics, and EMTs to provide urgent and emergency care, assess injuries, coordinate with Fire/EMS, and offer customer service to the public.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide medical assistance to injured or sick persons on facility premises.
  • Monitor and communicate with ALS EMTs concerning chief complaint and transfer care effectively.
  • Assess non-emergency injuries and illnesses; provide first aid and medical intervention.
  • Determine the severity of illness or injury and initiate emergency response as required.
  • Maintain first aid and medical supplies, inventory, and equipment; process replenishment requests.
  • Ensure medical equipment is functional, clean, and sanitized.
  • Properly dispose of biohazard materials.
  • Provide information to injured or sick persons regarding urgent clinics, hospitals, or emergency rooms.
  • Complete reports and documentation within expected standards.
  • Perform work according to established protocols, policies, and procedures of the department.
  • Provide excellent customer service to attendees and employees when not responding to an emergency.
  • Dispense over-the-counter medications upon request.
  • Perform additional tasks as needed to support department success.

  • Ability to learn purpose‑built computer programs.
  • Ability to read and follow building floor plans, policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Ability to provide professional, well articulated feedback to managers and co‑workers.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in emergency situations.
  • Ability to run 1/3 of a mile over varied terrain during emergency incidents.
  • Availability for dayshift, swing shift, late shifts (until ~0300), weekends, holidays, and urgent requests.
Working Conditions

The position involves indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to varying weather, including extreme heat and cold. Duties require prolonged standing, walking, occasional running, and physical activities such as crawling, kneeling, and climbing. Candidates should be prepared for physically demanding tasks while maintaining high awareness and responsiveness.

Eligibility Notice

If you were terminated for cause during any employment with Metro or resigned in lieu of termination, you may be ineligible for rehire for a minimum of 3 years.

Required Qualifications
  • Current and valid certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Current and valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation or BLS certification.
  • Ability to pass the Human Performance Test (HPE) that simulates essential job tasks; offers contingent on successful completion.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in emergency medical response; or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for successful performance.
Compensation and Representation

Full‑salary range: step 1 ($25.43) to step 7 ($34.09) per hour. Most appointments are made at step 1. This rankable position is eligible for overtime and represented by ILWU

Telework and Mobility

Positions may be designated “hybrid telework,” allowing work away from the office with occasional office attendance required. All employees must reside in Oregon or Washington; the department does not support remote work from other locations.
