Position: Coder Certified (Remote) - Surgery
Location: St. Joseph

Position Summary

Position reviews medical record documentation to determine appropriate billing codes and necessary documentation.

Primary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Reviews the documentation in the record to identify all pertinent facts necessary to select the comprehensive diagnoses and procedures that fully describe the patients conditions and treatment.
  • Evaluates and assigns CPT codes and ICD-9 diagnosis codes.
  • Meets with physicians to review documentation, resolve coding issues, secure signatures of all unsigned dates of service, and tag files for follow up.
  • Acts as lead person and assists coders with IBC staff on medical terminology and policy interpretation as required.
  • Assists with efforts to increase physician awareness of documentation requirements.
  • Prepares case reports and initiates follow‑up for the billing process.

  • A diploma, certification or degree is not required.
  • Certified Coding Associate (CCA) – American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) – American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Certified Coding Specialist – Physician based (CCS-P) – American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) – American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Certified Professional Coder – Apprentice (CPC-A) – American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Certified Professional Coder – Hospital (CPC-H) – American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Certified Professional Coder – Hospital Apprentice (CPC-H-A) – American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) – American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) – American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)

Preferred Qualifications

Previous coding experience or experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in a related field.

Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding.

Salary Range

$25.30 - $37.94 per hour (Grade C10-H)
