Job Summary
The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Utah is hiring a laboratory technician to join investigators, lab personnel, and GI study coordinators. We are building a comprehensive Microbiota and GI Immunology Consortia (MAGIC) Biobank to capture biospecimens from patients across our gastroenterology, hepatology, and GI surgery clinics, procedures, and operating rooms. The role is part of the growing MAGIC initiative and is expected to be fully translational, coordinating the collection, processing, and storage of patient biospecimens and working closely with the Principal Investigator, Amiko Uchida, MD.
The position is predominantly in‑person with selective remote work permitted under agreed circumstances. The initial term is two or more years, with competitive pay in the range of $35,000–$45,000.
Responsibilities- Attend and participate in Investigator and staff meetings; advise the team on specific study assignments and timelines.
- Assist with clinical research coordinator (CRC) biospecimen collection, including screening, enrolling and consenting patients.
- Practice biosafety laboratory skills and execute workflow protocols with excellent scientific laboratory skills.
- Perform statistical calculations, analyze data, and prepare reports summarizing results.
- Improve workflows through quality improvement initiatives, documentation, and organization.
- Conduct literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information for research.
- Perform laboratory tests and procedures using laboratory equipment.
- Monitor and assist with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials.
- Maintain records for biospecimens.
- Coordinate daily operations of assigned research team and maintain adequate resources to enable the PI’s research objectives.
- 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience.
- Background in bench science with an interest in working with patient biospecimens.
- Highly motivated, organized, and possesses excellent communication skills.
- Experience with biospecimen collection, laboratory workflow, and data analysis is preferred.
