A Brief OverviewMedical Laboratory Scientists perform a wide range of laboratory tests that aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Their primary responsibility involves conducting analyses on patient samples using varied laboratory equipment and techniques. They operate and maintain complex laboratory equipment and ensure accurate test results. They collaborate with other healthcare professionals to facilitate accurate diagnoses and treatments, and assume responsibility for problem resolution across the continuum of testing (pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical).
EducationQualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. Persons in the process of completing a NAACLS‑accredited MLS/CLS program may be eligible.
- 1 year experience performing specimen collecting or testing (preferred).
- Follows all applicable OSHA guidelines and hospital safety procedures (required).
- Proficient in scientific principles, procedures, and protocols (required).
- Ability to organize work and establish priorities (required).
- Strong attention to detail (required).
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations and interpret quantitative data (required).
- Ability to follow directions accurately (required).
- Medical Laboratory Scientist – ASCP required.
- People who are certification‑eligible may be considered.
- Persons licensed by a state requiring laboratory personnel licensure may be accepted.
- Single discipline technologist or specialist certification in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Molecular Biology, or Microbiology may be considered depending on the position.
- Process and handle blood and/or other biological specimens according to established procedures; understand specimen collection and pre‑analytical considerations.
- Perform and interpret a variety of clinical laboratory tests in hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, and immunohematology; perform quality control and recognize out‑of‑control systems.
- Troubleshoot questionable or erratic results, take remedial action, and report unusual findings to laboratory leadership.
- Maintain equipment as directed by manufacturers, laboratory policy, or leadership; operate equipment properly and understand its limitations.
- Participate in proficiency testing programs as assigned.
- Research and set up new procedures/analytical equipment; write, review, and edit laboratory documents in the document management system.
- Inventory supplies and evaluate new products for efficiency.
- Provide education and training to new team members, students, and interns, preparing lectures and study material as needed.
- Assess competency of other technical staff on non‑waived test systems in accordance with federal CLIA rules.
- Comply with all policies, standards, mandatory training, and requirements of Stormont Vail Health.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Position is not patient facing.
- Workspace is quiet, distraction‑free, and meets security and privacy standards.
- Stable access to electricity and a minimum of 25 mb upload speed.
- Dedicate full attention to job duties and maintain communication during working hours.
- Adhere to break and attendance schedules agreed upon with supervisor.
- Abide by Stormont Vail’s Remote Worker Policy and review the Remote Work Agreement annually.
