A Brief OverviewStormont Vail Health's Student Internship Program offers students in accredited Medical Laboratory Science (MLS/CLS) programs the opportunity to gain clinical laboratory experience. Interns develop technical proficiency, participate in bench rotations, and work alongside certified laboratory scientists. The Medical Laboratory Scientist Intern participates in pre analytical, analytical, and post analytical processes across hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, immunology, and immunohematology. The role emphasizes test theory, method performance, quality assurance, and problem resolution.
EducationQualifications
- Currently enrolled in a NAACLS accredited MLS/CLS bachelor’s program or related science program with eligibility for clinical rotations. (Required)
- Completion of at least junior‑level coursework (typically 90 credit hours or equivalent). (Required)
- Coursework or experience in laboratory or specimen collection or testing. (Preferred)
- Strong communication, organization, and analytical skills. (Required)
- Ability to manage time effectively and work independently or collaboratively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or relevant tools.
- Full‑time availability during the internship period.
- Professional conduct and accountability.
- Willingness to learn and take initiative.
- Timely completion of assigned tasks and deliverables.
- Respect for confidentiality.
- The Intern will support laboratory operations through administrative, analytical, and project‑based activities.
- Uphold patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
- Participate in team meetings and laboratory activities.
- Process and handle blood and biological specimens according to established procedures.
- Support testing in assigned departments, which may include preparation, labeling, and staining of slides; microbiology culture set‑up; preparation of reagents, standards and controls; running analytical instrumentation under supervision of technical staff.
- Monitor the add‑on work queue and retrieve specimens for further testing.
- Maintain inventory and cleanliness of the department/bench where assigned.
- Support research, data analysis, and special lab projects.
- Assist with supply inventory and evaluation of new products.
- Conduct background investigation/research or data collection to support lab initiatives.
- Present a summary of internship accomplishments at completion.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies, standards, mandatory training and requirements of Stormont Vail Health.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Position is Not Patient Facing.
- Workspace is quiet and distraction‑free, allowing compliance with security and privacy standards.
- Stable access to electricity and a minimum of 25 mb upload and internet speed.
- Dedicate full attention to the job duties and communication during working hours.
- Adhere to break and attendance schedules agreed upon with supervisor.
- Abide by Stormont Vail’s Remote Worker Policy and review and acknowledge the Remote Work Agreement annually.
