Job OverviewAssists in most aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. An Operations Pharmacy Technician I can only perform some aspects of drug distribution and preparation. Technicians function in accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines under the supervision of a pharmacist.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided: MD – Pharmacy Technician License or Pharmacy Technician Student Permit through Maryland Board of Pharmacy; OH – Certified or Registered Pharmacy Technician License or Trainee License through Ohio Board of Pharmacy; PA – Pharmacy Technician License or Pharmacy Technician Trainee License through the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy;
WV – Pharmacy Technician License or Trainee License through West Virginia Board of Pharmacy;
Remote workers – additional license from state of residence.
- Associate’s degree or post‑high school education in a science field of study or graduate of a pharmacy technician training program.
- Six (6) months of pharmacy technician experience.
- Prepare unit‑dose medications, deliver medications, order and deliver drug supplies.
- Read physician orders/prescriptions and prepare medication for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for pediatric and geriatric patients.
- Understand standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations and symbols common in prescribing and dispensing.
- Communicate with patients or caregivers to determine medication possession and scheduling of delivery, pickup, or shipment.
- Accurately prepare and deliver controlled substances and maintain all necessary records.
- Take inventory and analyze patient‑care area medication supplies, replacing outdated or deteriorated medications and replenishing depleted inventory.
- Accurately prepare non‑parenteral medications, including oral solutions and suspensions for pediatric patients.
- Label parenteral and prescription products appropriately.
- Perform arithmetic calculations for dosage determinations required in medication and solution preparation.
- Perform duties in accordance with departmental standards for speed and accuracy.
- Prepare and label prepackaged medications after determining usage patterns and prepackaging requirements; maintain related records.
- Maintain inventory and supplies in assigned pharmacy service areas.
- Answer telephone and channel calls to appropriate individuals.
- Ensure pharmacy service areas and drug storage areas are kept clean and orderly.
- Only pharmacists can receive oral prescriptions from prescribers or prescribers’ authorized designees.
- Only pharmacists can consult with prescribers about patients’ prescriptions.
- Only pharmacists can provide confidential patient information to other health professionals or insurance companies.
- Only pharmacists can check medications before dispensing them to patients.
- Only pharmacists can consult with patients about prescribed medication use and other health issues.
- Only pharmacists can recommend over‑the‑counter medications.
Walk and stand or sit for long periods. Lift up to 30 pounds and push up to 50 pounds. Dexterity required for manipulating and reaching.
