Position: Coding Representative - Professional Coding Division (PCD) - Patient Financial Services

Coding Representative – Professional Coding Division (PCD) – Patient Financial Services

University of Iowa Health Care’s Professional Coding Division seeks a Coding Representative to assign ICD‑10‑CM diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes for services including comprehensive coding professional services, professional outpatient encounters, and professional services provided during hospital inpatient stays.

This position is eligible for remote work. Training will be held either onsite or via hybrid (Inhouse/Teams) at the HSSB building. Remote work arrangements are reviewed annually in accordance with the remote work program and policies.

Position Responsibilities
  • Review medical records to assign CPT/HCPCS and/or ICD‑10‑CM diagnosis and procedure codes per internal policies, coding guidelines, and regulations.
  • Monitor compliance and coding standards to ensure accurate reimbursement, including HIPAA compliance.
  • Communicate with physicians, residents, and other staff when additional information is needed for code assignment or to resolve documentation discrepancies.
  • Meet departmental targets for volume and accuracy of codes assigned.
  • Adopt initiatives that improve compliance and reduce institutional risks.
  • Assist in providing and analyzing reports on documentation issues, coding patterns, physician productivity, and reimbursement trends.
  • Participate in internal coding and development training as needed.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of professional coding rules and experience with ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, HCPCS, NCCI edits, NCD, LCD, and outpatient coding guidelines.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail‑oriented with strong time‑management and prioritization abilities.
  • Ability to handle complex situations with minimal supervision.
  • Certification required: RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CPC‑A, or equivalent (nationally recognized credentialing body such as AHIMA or AAPC).
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and/or experience.
Desirable Qualifications
  • At least one year of medical coding and/or billing experience.
  • Knowledge of coding and billing in a teaching setting.
  • Experience with federal healthcare regulations (HIPAA, CMS).
  • Experience with Epic.
  • Training in AI in healthcare.
  • Knowledge of UI Health Care’s Patient Financial Services functions, systems, and policies.
