Job Summary
Supervises the activities of the Hospital Billing Department relating to claims, follow-up, credits, variances, and denials for hospital‑based services. Primary responsibilities are staffing plans, schedules, productivity, quality assurance, performance management, and coaching and development of staff. Works collaboratively with staff, peers, and department Manager to achieve goals set forth by Patient Financial Services leadership.
Essential Functions- Ensures adequate staffing for the Hospital Billing functions for claims, follow‑up, credits, variance, and denials. Reviews the PPL calendar and work queue volumes daily and approves PPL in accordance with organizational and departmental policy.
- Provides resource support to staff related to department responsibilities and operations as well as computer systems and procedures.
- In collaboration with the department Manager, develops productivity targets and reports to measure and assess the productivity of Hospital Billing staff. Reports include unique accounts worked, account activity scoring, and dollars recovered per staff person. Assesses staff goals and makes adjustments based on business variables.
- In collaboration with the Revenue Cycle Training and Education Services teams, ensures the quality audit process is effective and representative of individual staff performance. Develops quality markers for audit and assessment and maintains the audit tool.
- Monitors and delivers performance feedback to Hospital Billing staff. Delivers productivity and quality feedback on a monthly basis. Utilizes the performance management tool to document performance throughout the year and prepares staff reviews in collaboration with the department Manager.
- Prepares corrective action and performance improvement documents for staff when needed. Collaborates with the department Manager and the Human Resources representative for approval and delivers feedback to staff.
- Monitors billing reports and dashboards daily to ensure debit and credit receivables are worked timely and efficiently. Reviews total candidate for bill, total denials, total credits, claim submissions, skips, runs, edits, and DNBs.
- Participates in interview teams for all new employees, providing input to the department Manager on selection and orienting new employees to the policies and procedures specific to the Hospital Billing department.
- Receives, investigates, and responds to problems and/or questions from parents, physicians, payers, and departments. Determines appropriate action or refers to appropriate personnel for follow‑up.
- Assists in developing and encouraging the adoption of process improvement changes that enhance the billing experience.
- Performs people‑management responsibilities for employees, including employee engagement, recruitment, performance management, and development.

- Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or a closely related field (Preferred).
- 2+ years supervisory/lead experience in hospital or large physician office billing, leading and working with teams and collecting and analyzing data. Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Minimum 2 years proficiency in hospital patient accounting procedures, typically acquired through hospital accounts receivable collection experience.
- Computer‑related experience with spreadsheets.
