Title

Physical Therapist Assistant, PRN, Acute Care, Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo

Under the direction and guidance of a licensed Physical Therapist, provides treatment to patients suffering from injuries, muscle, nerve, joint, and bone diseases to improve and restore function, increase strength, relieve pain, and enhance functional independence. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of a Physical Therapy Assistant Program required
  • Physical Therapist Assistant experience preferred
  • Physical Therapist Assistant license in good standing in the state of Michigan
  • BLS certification required within 3 months of hire
  • Current driver’s license in the state of Michigan, availability of a vehicle for business use on a daily basis, and proof of insurance required for Bronson at Home
  • Basic word processing and typing skills to operate a PC/mobile device
  • Must work as a team member and communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and all team members
  • Social sensitivity and effective communication skills required
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle delicate patient care matters
  • Capacity to handle mental/visual fatigue typical of roles with frequent, significant deadlines and computer use up to 40% of the time
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods, lift light‑weight objects (≤ 20 pounds) and assist in heavier patient handling tasks

Work may include the operation of a personal computer or CRT for up to 40 percent of the time. Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance and direction of a licensed Physical Therapist, the Physical Therapist Assistant is responsible for clinical and administrative duties.

Clinical Duties
  • Follow the plan of care and goals established by the Physical Therapist
  • Provide family and community education
  • Perform direct patient care, including physical, electrical, mechanical, and heat treatments according to the treatment plan
  • Conduct individual and/or group physical therapy activities and instruct patients on necessary skills
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team discussions or hospital rounds
  • Assist in program development and serve as a resource person in areas of expertise
  • Participate in student programs and rotations, and provide in‑services to the Bronson Rehabilitation System
  • May need to cross‑train and provide coverage at other departments within Rehabilitation Services as needed
Administration Duties
  • Document in the electronic health record per compliance timelines
  • Communicate limitations that prevent timely documentation to leadership
  • Maintain accurate, legible, and complete records for each person served
  • Serve on committees and task forces
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrate time‑management skills
  • Supervise Rehabilitation Clinical Assistant, PTA students, and volunteers

In addition, the Physical Therapist Assistant has the responsibility to maintain and upgrade their competencies based on the population served, type and nature of the care provided, and advances in healthcare sciences and technology.

For Bronson at Home positions, driving your own vehicle on a regularly scheduled basis to perform business on behalf of Bronson is required and will require a successful MVR check. Proof of valid auto insurance on that vehicle that will be driven while on duty for Bronson is required. It is the employee’s responsibility to submit insurance renewals before current coverage expires and to update coverage if a different vehicle is used.
