Overview
Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence‑based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. With 1,060 professionals and staff, UBHC provides inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, crisis stabilization, family and caregiver support, community outreach, case management, supportive housing, employment, prevention, consultation, employee assistance programs, a licensed therapeutic school, a suicide prevention helpline, and peer help lines for military and law enforcement personnel.
The position is a Military/Veteran Peer Support Specialist III, located within the Military Services Unit of Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care. The role provides person‑centered, culturally competent, consumer‑friendly services through the Call Center, handling telephone, chat, and text requests, reviewing service needs, and offering peer support, referrals, and disposition as appropriate.
Responsibilities- Provide customer‑friendly, empathic, and concerned customer service to individuals served.
- Deliver direct care services in alignment with the philosophy of UBHC.
- Review service requests and referrals for all populations, responding according to prescribed departmental procedures.
- Document contacts, interventions, and interactions with callers in a timely manner and in accordance with established policies.
- Maintain knowledge of Center and Unit policies and procedures.
- Contribute to and support the mission, vision, values, goals, and objectives of UBHC.
Minimum Education and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- At least three (3) years of active duty service or thirty (30) days in a combat zone, including medically discharged or medically retired service members, or four (4) years of National Guard service.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to use a computer to record services and perform basic office functions.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in peer support or counseling roles.
- Ability to speak clearly and write proficiently; hearing is essential.
- Focus on tasks despite interruptions.
- Sit for extended periods and document in electronic contact records.
- May lift up to 20 lbs.
- Handle phone requests under time‑pressure.
- Work in a clean, well‑lit, quiet to moderately loud setting.
- Handle emergency or crisis situations.
