Position Overview
A Coding Specialist will review medical record documentation and assign accurate ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM and CPT codes for services provided by physicians and other qualified healthcare professionals. The role may qualify as hybrid or fully remote, with onsite presence required within 60 miles of the Topeka campus in case of system downtime.
Responsibilities- Selects and enters appropriate ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM and CPT codes using the encoding system and available resources.
- Utilizes Electronic Medical Record applications to process claims electronically and/or manually on clinic encounter charge tickets as appropriate.
- Routes completed charge tickets to the business office for timely charge entry.
- Applies evaluation and management coding guidelines, document medical necessity, and complies with payer‑specific guidelines.
- Provides accurate date and accident information on charge claims.
- Collaborates with clinic and hospital staff to resolve claim issues and works professionally and timely to address inquiries.
- Attends monthly department meetings and provides feedback on coding topics.
- Contacts physicians or other professionals when clarification of documentation is needed.
- Notifies the Director of any documentation or billing practices that do not meet facility or regulatory guidelines.
- Stays current with coding guidelines and regulatory changes through educational materials, and may educate clinicians on coding and billing practices.
- Complies with all policies, standards, mandatory training and Stormont Vail Health requirements.
- Minimum of 2 years coding experience.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, reimbursement processes, and regulatory guidelines and ability to process claims through application.
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) – AHIMA, or
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) – AHIMA, or
- Certified Coding Specialist‑Physician‑Based (CCS‑P) – AHIMA, or
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
- Certified Professional Coder – AAPC.
- Workspace must be quiet, distraction‑free, secure, with stable electricity and a minimum of 25
Mbps upload speed. - Full attention to job duties and communication during working hours.
- Adhere to break and attendance schedules agreed with supervisor.
