Orientation & Mobility Specialist

The Orientation & Mobility Specialist provides quality assessments and training to clients of all ages throughout the New Orleans and Baton Rouge regions. The job requires both facility-based and itinerant training to foster safe and independent travel skills for the clients we serve. The Orientation & Mobility Specialist participates in community outreach events, advocacy opportunities, and meetings with local coalitions to represent the needs of people with vision loss.

He/she consults on the continuing development of Vision Rehabilitation Service programs.

Job Responsibilities:

Perform quality O&M assessments and subsequent training to support the mobility needs of clients across all service areas to include facility-based, home-based, work-based, and community-based venues.

Collaborate with all O&M staff to optimize communication regarding client needs and plans for services across locations.

Develop goals and objectives following evaluation to ensure that each client reaches his/her highest ability based on his/her needs and desires. Collect pre and post data to measure outcomes of service.

Submit assessments, progress summaries, discharge summaries, daily notes, and invoices by procedure to support reimbursement from all funding sources. Accurately document all services in Apricot as determined by department policy to ensure timely invoicing and to maintain good communication with Lighthouse staff, referring Physicians, and contracting agencies.

Provide group instruction in O&M to participants in the New Vision and Next Step Programs for clients who qualify for Older Blind services as outlined in the program curricula.

Provide O&M assessments and training to blind youth, as per contractual agreement with area school systems, as needed.

Develop IEP goals and objectives for each child following evaluation and complete subsequent reports as required by the state for reimbursement, as needed.

Recommend white canes and other adapted devices for mobility to clients as appropriate, and complete subsequent documentation.

Supervise O&M students as determined by University guidelines to ensure successful internships and to grow the field of Vision Rehabilitation.

Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to support the needs of all New Orleans and Baton Rouge service programs for youth and adults.

Conduct sensitivity training for all new hires within the first 2-weeks of their employment.

Conduct Employee Evacuation Program (EEP) assessments and subsequent training to ensure that all employees who are visually impaired are able to safely exit the facility during an emergency.

Support the needs of Lighthouse employees with vision loss by conducting assessments and training as needed to enhance efficiency, productivity, and safety on the job. Consult with management staff to resolve identified challenges as requested.

Collaborate with the Mo-Mobility team to enhance public transit services for people who are visually impaired or Deaf-Blind across the New Orleans and Baton Rouge regions.

Participate in education and advocacy events to promote inclusion for people with vision impairment. Represent the Lighthouse at local coalition meetings. Provide sensitivity training to community partners and in-services to internal staff on topics relevant to Orientation & Mobility.

Stay informed of changes and improvements in the field of Vision Rehabilitation to guarantee the provision of optimal services to clients, to support program development, and to promote the growth of the organization.

Foster a team environment with effective communication and a coordinated approach to providing vision rehabilitation services.

Follow all VRS expectations, policies, and procedures.

Follow all ISO procedures as required.

Perform other duties as assigned by Department Head.

Job Qualifications:

Education:

Degree from an accredited program with emphasis in Orientation & Mobility;
Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist required.
