Position specifics

The Penn State Psychological Clinic is seeking a full-time Staff Psychologist/Therapist to provide a variety of adult clinical services in a dynamic training and community mental health environment, as part of Penn State's top-rated clinical psychology doctoral training program. Penn State benefits are included.

The clinic is among the largest associated with a doctoral training program in the United States and serves a dual purpose as the training and research site for the Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology, and a large community mental health center.

The Psychological Clinic, located on Penn State's University Park campus, provides psychological and psychiatric outpatient treatment and psychological and neuropsychological assessment for adults, families, adolescents, and children, as well as school- and community-based intervention programs.

Responsibilities includes but is not limited to
  • Provide individual and group psychotherapy to various clinical populations, including adult clients who meet the state’s definition of having a serious and persistent mental illness, in both short- and long-term treatment formats
  • Provide initial consultation and comprehensive diagnostic, psychological, and/or neuropsychological assessment for adult clients with a wide range of mental health, behavioral, emotional, and developmental concerns
  • As necessary, collaborate with psychiatric and health care providers and provide consultation regarding complex crises and mental health concerns to various key stakeholders
  • Complete all required documentation in a timely and compliant manner
  • May become involved in teaching, research, scholarly publications and presentations, and training activities

All services of this position will be expected to be performed according to relevant ethical and professional standards of care, using evidence-based treatment approaches.

Important Note

This position will be filled as a Mental Health Counselor – Senior Professional or Psychologist – Advanced Professional, depending on the final applicant’s experience and education.

Psychologist – Advanced Professional responsibilities

If filled at the Psychologist
- Advanced Professional level, the Staff Psychologist may also provide supervision and training for the Psychology Training Program and Psychological Clinic. This may involve the following key responsibilities:

  • Clinical supervision, including of graduate students and practicum instruction
  • Administering, scoring, and interpreting psychological and neuropsychological assessment instruments
Minimum Education , Work Experience & Required Certifications Psychologist – Advanced Professional
  • Education:

    Doctor of Philosophy (PHD) or Doctor of Psychology (PSYD)
  • Experience:

    3+ years of relevant experience
  • Required

    Certifications:

    Licensed Psychologist
    - Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology

Those who are eligible to become a Licensed Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (must be licensed within 12 months of hire) will also be considered. Applicants must also have completed a 1 year full-time pre-doctoral internship in professional psychology.

Mental Health Counselor – Senior Professional

    Master’s degree
  • Experience:

    6+ years of relevant experience
  • Required

    Certifications:

    Licensed Professional Counselor or Licensed Clinical Social Worker
    - Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors

Licensed therapists who are license-eligible in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the time of hire for either the Licensed Professional Counselor or Licensed Clinical Social Worker will also be considered (must be licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania within six months of hire).

Additional Qualifications for Both Levels

Experience with conducting diagnostic psychological assessments and providing evidence-based treatment for a broad range of clinical disorders is required.
