Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health Profession's (DHP) mission is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice, and providing information to health care practitioners and the public.

This sworn position ensures the timely and accurate review of allegations of misconduct through supervision of the complaint intake process, case processing activities and staff responsible for those processes. The Case Intake Manager enforces all applicable Virginia statutes, federal laws, and the rules and regulations of the 13 health regulatory boards by independently conducting and supervising others in conducting the initial review, evaluation and timely processing of a variety of complaints of alleged violations against health care practitioners licensed, certified or registered by the health regulatory boards of the Department of Health Professions in order to safeguard the lives, health, and safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth and by clearly communicating the results of the case intake process.

The selected candidate for this position must be willing to perform mobile work and to maintain a remote office with high speed Internet access, within assigned region or within a 30-mile radius of region border(s) as a condition of employment. The region for this position is the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area, which consists of the cities of Richmond, Hopewell, Colonial Heights and Petersburg, and the Counties of Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover, Caroline, King William, Goochland, Powhatan, Amelia, Dinwiddie, Sussex, Prince George, Charles City and New Kent.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and independently supervise and lead others.
  • Analytic skill including the ability to efficiently access and process a large volume of information from multiple sources to make rapid, thorough conclusions and sound decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate the work of a team, including organizing and managing time and case assignments; establishing and evaluating performance goals; and ensuring the quality, quantity and timeliness of work.
  • Comprehensive knowledge, skills and abilities related to investigative techniques to include interviewing, data collection and the analysis of complex records and reports.
  • Strong self-direction/motivation with excellent organizational skills and demonstrated abilities to effectively and independently manage multiple assignments and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Interpersonal skills including abilities to maintain confidentiality and to lead and work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Verbal and written communication skills, including impartiality and objectivity with a demonstrated ability to compose clear and concise verbal and written reports.
  • Ability to analyze work practices/ processes and recommend effective improvements.
  • Ability to establish workload projections for areas of responsibility and plan for necessary resources.
  • Demonstrated skill achieving consensus among individuals and groups.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal regulations governing health care professionals and health care delivery.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze complex data, including effective utilization of work productivity data.

    A working knowledge of health care/medical terminology in order to interpret health care records and communicate with health care professionals and of federal or state health care laws and regulations.
  • Skill in the use of a personal computer with standard office software for report writing, information exchange, online research, and database management (to include electronic file management and queries).
  • Must be willing to perform mobile work and to maintain a remote office with high speed Internet access, within assigned region or within a 30-mile radius of region border(s) as a condition of employment.

Additional Considerations
  • Professional experience in healthcare regulation, preferably in a leadership or supervisory capacity
  • Experience independently conducting comprehensive healthcare investigations or inspections that require the direct interpretation of healthcare laws and regulations
  • Experience taking and assessing consumer complaints, both verbally and written, and clearly communicating the results in an efficient and accurate manner.
