Medical Assistant, Surgical Tech
Description
Primarily responsible for assisting in care and service to the patient in the operating room under the supervision of a registered nurse. Assists in the preparation and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment. Transport patients, prepare patients for procedures, and during surgeries provide instruments and other supplies to surgeons as needed.
Essential Functions- Prepare operating rooms for surgery
- Sterilize equipment and make sure that there are adequate supplies for surgery
- Transport patients for surgery and place and position patients on the table
- Ready patients for surgery, including covering them with sterile drapes and washing and disinfecting incision sites
- Help surgeons during surgery by passing them instruments and other sterile supplies
- Count supplies, such as surgical instruments and sponges, to ensure that no foreign objects are retained in patients
- Maintain a sterile environment to prevent patient infection
- During an operation, may hold retractors or set up robotic surgical equipment
- Handle specimens taken for laboratory analysis
- After operation, may apply bandages and other dressings, transfer patients to recovery rooms, and restock supplies
- Perform all other duties as assigned
High school diploma or GED; graduate of a recognized, accredited surgical technologist program preferred
Certification by the American Association of Surgical Technologists required
Current BCLS certification
One year of experience in an operating room with experience in a variety of surgical procedures
For roles that are remote (i.e., Work From Home (WFM)) or hybrid (i.e., partial onsite at a VSP location and WFM), must demonstrate a high level of engagement in virtual environments, including maintaining camera presence during meetings to support effective communication and team alignment
Working Conditions/Physical DemandsThis position generally works in an operating room environment. The working environment is well lit and ventilated.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
- Speak clearly and concisely.
- Use hands to manipulate objects and paperwork.
- Use close vision and be able to focus.
- Withstand long and strenuous periods of work which include extensive walking, standing and varied body motions.
- Wear safety attire such as scrubs and sterile gowns, gloves, caps, and masks.
- Work physically close to others.
- Ability to lift and move patients or heavy trays of medical supplies.
- Physical work not to exceed fifty (50) pounds without assistance.

The compensation range for the role is listed below. Applicable salary ranges may differ across markets. Actual pay will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law. As a part of the compensation package, this role may include eligible bonuses and commissions.
