Job Summary

University Health and Counseling (UHC) is part of the Division of Student Life at the University of Michigan. The UHC Physical Therapy clinic provides physical therapy to currently enrolled students at the University of Michigan with acute and chronic injuries or illnesses. We follow the UHC mission which promotes and protects the health and well-being of students to enable individuals to better achieve their educational and personal goals.

We support the health and well-being of the campus community through a public health-informed approach that emphasizes support, prevention, education, and treatment. We are inspired to help students realize their potential, cope with the stresses of life, work productively, and connect meaningfully with others. The physical therapy department staff includes physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, student volunteers and student employees who provide clinic support, and clerical staff.

Position

Summary

To assess, plan, and implement individualized physical therapy treatment programs for patients with acute and chronic injuries, diseases, disorders, and disabilities to relieve pain, develop or restore physical function, wellness, fitness, and quality of life as it relates to movement and health, as prescribed by the referring clinician. To delegate to and supervise Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs). To supervise Physical Therapy students in their clinical internships at UHS.

Responsibilities*

Patient Care: 95%

  • Perform and document an initial patient exam using diagnostic and prognostic muscle, joint, nerve, and functional ability tests in order to identify dysfunction, determine a physical therapy diagnosis, and establish plans and goals for treatment.
  • Obtain patient's consent to physical therapy plan of care and goals.
  • Perform and document periodic re-evaluations and modify physical therapy programs to achieve maximum benefit.
  • Plan, prepare, and carry out individually designed physical therapy programs using appropriate interventions such as therapeutic exercise, modalities, manual therapy, education, and self-management.
  • Discharge patients from physical therapy when goals or desired outcomes are attained and provide for follow up care or referrals as needed.
  • Document per unit standards.
  • Delegate portions of physical therapy treatment to Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA) as appropriate and co-sign PTA notes.
  • Keep current in clinical practice and changes in the profession.

Teaching: 5%

  • Prepare and conduct in-service educational programs related to physical therapy.
  • Supervise Physical Therapist Assistants when patient care is delegated to the PTA. Educate PTA as needed on preferred exercises and treatment techniques.
Required Qualifications *
  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy or equivalent post Baccalaureate degree in Physical Therapy.
  • Current licensure as a Physical Therapist in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Physical Therapist with concentration in advanced outpatient Orthopedic or Sports Medicine physical therapy practice.
Desired Qualifications*
  • Experience with EPIC or other electronic health records.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and applicants for this position will not be sponsored for work visas.

Selected candidates whose start date is between 4/1/2026 - 9/1/2026 will not be eligible for the university FY26-27 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.

Relocation will not be offered for this role.
