The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Specialist, Health Promotions.Working as a member of the
Health Promotions and Education department, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.

Responsible for advancing medical and behavioral health system transformation to improve the treatment of tobacco dependence within clinical settings. Partner with medical, mental health, and behavioral healthcare senior administrators to drive policy development and implementation aligned with evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Provides coordination, training, and technical assistance to ensure effective and sustainable integration of tobacco treatment into clinical care. Coordinate, implement and evaluate lung health programs.

This is a 100% grant funded position.

Location:
Long Island, New York

  • Home-based:
    The Lung Association does not currently have an office in Long Island, New York. This position is home-based and job responsibilities will take place in Long Island, New York.

Responsibilities:

  • Support Medical and Mental Health (including Substance-Use Disorder Health) Care Systems and Policy Change by establishing contact with leadership at these organizations to facilitate tobacco free policy.
  • Initiate and nurture high-level health system organization administrators to gain commitment for written policies for treating Tobacco Dependence in the clinical setting as prescribed by the Clinical Practice Guideline for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence.
  • Obtain written policies for organization-wide systems change for implementing Tobacco Dependence Treatment (TDT) in the clinical setting using the three approved strategies.
  • Maintain consistent communication with high level administrators and TDT project coordinators to implement policy systems change in coordination with other project leaders.
  • Train clinicians and staff on the TDT policy, Tobacco Treatment including the 5 A’s – Ask, Assess, Advice, Assist and Arrange for follow‑up, and other tobacco related topics.
  • Develop and submit timely reports as required by the Association and funders, including but not limited to weekly updates in the Association’s database, as well as monthly management, grant, and program metrics reports.
  • Represent the American Lung Association as a member of community, civic, and/or health coalitions and organizations related to the Association’s mission.
  • Build, maintain, and cultivate relationships with funders, facilitators, and community partners to encourage program delivery, sustainability, and growth across service territory, including the American Lung Association’s programs where applicable.
  • Select and participate in local, state, and national seminars and courses designed to increase skills and knowledge related to job requirements.
  • Serve on the Association’s regional and national work groups and committees as requested.
  • Participate in and support all area events and provide support for annual report, awards, grants and other activities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in public health or related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience developing and implementing community awareness, education, and programs specifically related to areas of public health.
  • Prior experience in public health, community relations, public policy, and/or advocacy.
  • Ability to learn new information pertaining to all tobacco products, stop smoking medications, Tobacco Dependence Treatment protocols, new data from scientific studies.
  • Must be a self‑starter with excellent communication skills both written and oral.
