Ophthalmic Technical Assistant - USFTGP Ophthalmology - ( 2600031R )

Description

Work with ophthalmologists to assist during eye surgery and setting up and performing maintenance on equipment. In addition, ophthalmology technologists often perform diagnostic testing, including measuring a patient's vision. Technologists in this career field must be familiar with ophthalmic pharmacology and understand the use of corrective lenses.

Essential Functions
  • Meets with patients to discuss ocular medical history, chief complaint, current medications, allergies and family history to prepare the patient for the physician
  • Performs initial work up including visual testing, color vision testing, retinoscopy, and refraction for the physician to review and consider during visit
  • Performs various diagnostic tests and measurements including A-Scans, diagnostic ultrasounds, keratometry, lensometry, tonometry, and visual fields to support the physician's review
  • Reviews patient records for completeness to allow for a timely and efficient patient visit
  • Maintains supplies and equipment in examining rooms to allow for adequate patient care
  • Completes in basket messages to allow for timely communication to patients and providers
  • Maintains overall patient experience and safety, following all emergency clinical policies and protocols, to allow for optimal experience of care
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • 1 year experience as an Ophthalmic Tech
Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of ophthalmic testing methods, vision measurement techniques, and diagnostic procedures such as tonometry, keratometry, retinoscopy, A-scans, and visual fields.

Ability to accurately obtain patient histories, chief complaints, medications, allergies, and family ocular history, and document findings clearly and thoroughly.

  • Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot ophthalmic equipment used for patient testing and measurements.
  • Ability to provide clear instructions, respond to patient inquiries professionally, and communicate effectively with providers through messages, documentation, and clinical updates.
  • Knowledge of clinical protocols, emergency procedures, and quality verification processes to ensure safe, accurate, and compliant patient care.
