This position has the primary responsibility of performing molecular testing on samples from the state of Michigan using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). At the entry level, this scientist position utilizes Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) for bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic pathogens of interest. This scientist utilizes amplicon, metagenomic, short read and long read whole genome sequencing approaches to generate sequencing data.
This sequencing technology is used for epidemiological outbreak tracing of said pathogens necessary to keep the citizens of Michigan safe.
Possession of a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, forensic science, or a related pure or applied science.

Laboratory Scientist 10One year of professional experience carrying out a variety of tests, analyses, or production and research activities involving chemical, biochemical and biological samples, specimens, and products equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist 9.
Laboratory Scientist P11Two years of professional experience carrying out a variety of tests, analyses, or production and research activities involving chemical, biochemical and biological samples, specimens, and products equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist, including one year equivalent to a Laboratory Scientist 10.
The preferred and appointed candidate will be subject to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and/or alcohol testing.
Position Location/Remote OfficeThis is an in-person position; the physical location of this position is 3350 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Lansing, MI. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview.
Employees will be provided computers to perform state work. Phones may also be provided for necessary communications.
