The Phlebotomy Technician collects quality blood samples using various methods (capillary, venous, ultrasound) while ensuring patient safety and regulatory compliance. Responsibilities include patient identification, specimen labeling, handling, and transportation across all age groups in general care areas, pediatrics, the Emergency Department, Intensive Care, and Trauma Units. Must maintain patient confidentiality and uphold Tampa General Hospital's vision and values.
Demonstrates the knowledge and level of expertise to perform phlebotomy on all age groups. Computer competency in area of result inquiry, collection batch related processes and un-received specimen logs to assist with customer service within the department. Maintains competency in use of automated collection management system. Maintains acceptable productivity and specimen quality standards during work performance. Practices the principles of quality improvement by incorporating FOCUS-PDCA principles into daily activities, focusing on improvements and customer satisfaction.
Provides patient phlebotomy according to established procedures and protocols under sterile conditions. Minimizes volume of draw while obtaining adequate blood samples. Always arrives in a manner "Fit for Duty". Establishes a quality standard of performance by prioritizing work to achieve outcomes within requested time frame. Communicates correct information in a timely manner, using appropriate methods to access, retrieve and provide clear response to patient and customer inquiries.
Communicates in a manner clearly understood by all other members of the Phlebotomy Team and the clinical and technical staff. Demonstrates knowledge of new and pertinent information via discussion, communication, meetings, bulletin boards, memos and logbooks. Uses key words at key times to ensure effective, professional, and empathetic communication with patient, families, and visitors. Perform venipuncture and skin puncture procedures following proper techniques and safety protocols.
Conduct venipuncture procedures using ultrasound guidance when required. Accurately label tubes immediately after collection to ensure proper specimen identification. Adhere to laboratory protocols for specimen collection, labeling, handling, and transportation. Conduct accurate specimen testing using Point of Care (POC) equipment. Assist nursing units with specimen collection requests, including line and arterial collections and specimen transport. Ensure compliance with infection control, safety, and regulatory guidelines.
Maintain proper documentation of procedures and specimen collection in electronic medical records. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support efficient workflow and patient care.
Education Qualifications High School Diploma or GED Technical Program Phlebotomy Training Program Experience Qualifications Previous experience as a Phlebotomist is preferred but not required. Completion of coursework from an accredited program with at least one month of internship is also acceptable.
