We are looking for a warm, patient, and engaging companion for my 68-year-old mother-in-law, who is moving in with our family and has early-stage Alzheimer’s.
She is still quite independent and social. She knows her family, communicates well, and has many strong memories, but her short-term memory is declining. Our biggest priority is finding someone who can provide companionship and help her continue enjoying an active, fulfilling daily life rather than spending her days at home alone.
We would love someone who can take her on outings Starbucks is a favorite! as well as shopping, walks, lunch, the hair salon, errands, and other activities she enjoys. At home, companionship might include conversation, games, looking through photos, helping with simple activities, or just spending time together.
My husband and I both work full-time, and we also have two young children (almost 1 and 2.5) who are home during the day with their nanny. You would not be responsible for childcare, but we hope to find someone who is comfortable being part of a busy, loving household and who can help our mother-in-law stay connected and engaged with her grandchildren.
Because of her Alzheimer’s, we are looking for someone patient, dependable, attentive, and comfortable providing gentle reminders and redirection when needed. Experience with dementia or older adults would be wonderful. A safe driver with reliable transportation is important because getting her out of the house will be a significant part of the role.
Most importantly, we are hoping to find someone who genuinely enjoys companionship with older adults and will help her maintain as much independence, activity, and joy in her days as possible.
