Payroll Specialist – Anchorage, AK

Paid $70,000 - $80,000 annually. The Payroll Specialist is responsible for the timely processing of payroll, tax compliance filings, and maintenance of payroll records across multiple entities in Alaska and North Dakota.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage end‑to‑end weekly payroll processing for multiple entities.
  • Perform detailed data entry, review, and account reconciliations to ensure accuracy.
  • Administer employee deductions for voluntary benefits, tax with holdings, and retirement contributions.
  • Maintain and update employee payroll data, including new hires, terminations, salary adjustments, garnishments, and direct deposit information.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax laws; prepare and file payroll tax returns (Form 941, W‑2s, etc.).
  • Stay informed of changes in payroll legislation and tax rates.
  • Assist in internal and external payroll audits.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and personnel action files.
  • Generate standard and ad‑hoc payroll reports.
  • Support system upgrades, testing, and implementation of payroll process improvements.
  • Address employee inquiries; collaborate with HR on onboarding, offboarding, and leave calculations; administer garnishments, child support, and voluntary deductions.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of hands‑on payroll processing experience.
  • Proficiency with payroll software and strong knowledge of federal and state payroll regulations.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, data validation).
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines while handling confidential information.
  • Strong analytical and time‑management skills in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) – preferred.
  • Experience with multi‑state payroll, union payroll or government contractor requirements – preferred.
  • Familiarity with HRIS integrations and Sage 300 CRE – preferred.

Standard Hours
