Career Navigator (Part‑Time)

Summer Search, national (Southfield, MI based), is a 25‑year‑old nonprofit devoted to unlocking the full potential of underserved young people through mentoring and professional development. Our mission is to remove systemic barriers so that every student can chart a future of purpose and meaning.

The Opportunity

In partnership with Aon, the Summer Search Business Development team drives mentorship and apprenticeship programs. As a Part‑Time Career Navigator you will provide individualized coaching and support to apprentices and guidance to their managers, while working closely with program leadership at Aon and the Summer Search team.

What You’ll Do
  • Apprentice Support & Coaching (40%)
    • Conduct initial one‑on‑one intake assessments with apprentices and their managers.
    • Meet regularly to support workplace readiness, skill development, and professional growth.
    • Provide coaching and referrals for personal barriers such as childcare, transportation, or housing.
    • Maintain consistent communication to track academic standing, work‑based learning, and overall well‑being.
    • Track engagement, attendance, and case notes.
    • Develop individualized Success Agreement Plans or intervention plans in collaboration with apprentices, managers, and program teams.
  • Manager Engagement (20%)
    • Connect with managers monthly by email, Teams, or in person to discuss progress and provide guidance.
    • Facilitate balanced feedback between managers and apprentices, emphasizing positive reinforcement and constructive guidance.
    • Remind managers to complete required status reports and competency check‑ins.
  • Program Monitoring & Communication (15%)
    • Partner with the Aon Program Team to support all apprentices in meeting graduation requirements.
    • Proactively raise and document any high‑risk or concerning situations through established reporting channels.
  • Professional Development Program (20%)
    • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate monthly in‑person professional development sessions.
    • Coordinate event logistics including scheduling and on‑site arrangements.
    • Track participation to support progress documentation.
  • Other Duties (5%)
    • Provide occasional support for recruiting and engagement activities such as career fairs, open houses, interviews, and graduation celebrations.
Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of experience in workforce development or career advising, preferably with early‑career individuals.
  • Strong accountability, holding self and others responsible for decisions and results.
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills, inspiring commitment and managing conflicts constructively.
  • Project management experience, juggling multiple workflows and adapting to shifting priorities.
  • Critical consciousness of systemic barriers and the ability to take action against oppression.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Location & Hours

Part‑time: 15 hours per week (3 days a week, 5 hours per day). In‑person at the Southfield, MI office; occasional remote work may be possible with agreement.

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive hourly wage: $40 per hour. Non‑exempt position. Starting salary is benchmarked with market data.

Retention bonuses: $2,500 after 1 year, $2,500 after 2 years.
