Position: Director, Compensation

The Director, Compensation serves as the leader of the global compensation function and is responsible for establishing, evolving, and governing Calix’s compensation philosophy, strategy, and programs. As the company’s senior compensation subject matter expert, this role partners closely with executive leadership, the Compensation Committee, Talent & Culture, Finance, Legal, Payroll, HRIS, and Talent Acquisition to ensure compensation programs support business strategy, talent objectives, and shareholder interests.

This role combines strategic thought leadership with operational excellence to attract, retain, motivate, and reward top talent globally.

This is a remote position that can be based anywhere in the United States or Canada.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the global compensation function and team, establishing strategic direction for all compensation programs, policies, practices, and governance worldwide.
  • Serve as primary compensation advisor to executive leadership on strategy, competitiveness, and risk.
  • Coach and develop the compensation team, fostering a high‑performance culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous development.
  • Own design, governance, and administration of global compensation programs, including salary structures, annual reviews, incentive and bonus programs, recognition, geographic pay, and equity compensation.
  • Assist the Associate VP Total Rewards with executive compensation activities such as market benchmarking, pay analysis, peer group assessment, and compensation recommendations.
  • Develop materials, analyses, and recommendations for the Compensation Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Establish and evolve Calix’s compensation philosophy, ensuring programs remain competitive, equitable, and aligned with business objectives.
  • Lead job architecture, job leveling, career framework, and market pricing strategies across the organization.
  • Direct annual compensation planning processes, including merit, promotion, equity, and incentive cycles, aligned with financial and talent objectives.
  • Partner with Finance on compensation investments, workforce planning, and financial impact assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with global compensation regulations and emerging legislation, including pay transparency, equal pay, and executive disclosure requirements.
  • Identify market trends and best practices, recommending strategic enhancements to programs and policies.
  • Oversee compensation technology solutions, data analytics, reporting, and process improvements to increase efficiency and decision‑making effectiveness.
  • Lead compensation leadership for mergers, acquisitions, organizational redesigns, and expansion into new countries and initiatives.
Qualifications
  • 12–15+ years of progressive compensation experience, including substantial experience in the technology industry.
  • 7+ years of experience leading compensation teams and developing compensation professionals.
  • Deep expertise in global compensation strategy, executive compensation, equity programs, incentive design, market pricing, and governance.
  • Extensive experience supporting compensation programs within a publicly traded company environment.
  • Significant executive compensation experience, including Compensation Committee and Board‑level support.
  • Strong experience with compensation survey providers and market pricing tools such as Aon/Radford, Mercer, or WTW.
  • Strong Workday and Bettercomp compensation administration experience.
  • Exceptional analytical, financial modeling, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong interest and desire to apply AI to compensation programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) designation preferred.
  • Requires less than 25% travel and periodic attendance at in‑person meetings.
Compensation

The base pay range varies by location:

  • San Francisco Bay Area: $184,000 – $294,400 USD (Annual)
  • Selected US Metros and States: $160,000 – $256,000 USD (Annual)
  • Other US Locations: $144,000 – $230,400 USD (Annual)
Individual pay is determined based on residence location and multiple factors, including job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. The role may be eligible for a bonus as part of the total compensation package.
