Position: Employee Accommodation Specialist

Disability Services Coordinator

The Employee Accommodation Specialist specializes in workplace accommodations and consults with internal stakeholders on complex disability-related employment matters, creates case files, and develops and delivers educational training to best ensure institution-wide compliance with the requirements of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title I and institution disability policies and procedures.

The Employee Accommodation Specialist must have the expertise and skills to provide direct support to employees, Divisional Disability Representatives (DDRs), and supervisors during the interactive disability accommodation process for employees/applicants. In some cases, the incumbent will lead the interactive process. The ability to think creatively regarding workplace accommodations for employees/applicants with a broad range of disabilities within the framework of complex federal, state, and university rules/regulations/policies is critical.

The incumbent must have knowledge of, and experience with, a wide variety of medical and disability issues including the ability to understand and interpret medical information. They must have experience providing accommodation strategies to a variety of work environments and/or other related settings.

The incumbent must have exceptional oral and written communication skills in order to manage challenging accommodation situations while maintaining a high level of confidentiality. They must be adept at communicating with individuals with a wide variety of disabilities and/or medical conditions. The Employee Accommodation Specialist is expected to exercise considerable judgment, discretion, and initiative while maintaining a high degree of flexibility.

Key

Job Responsibilities:
  • Drafts, analyzes, and compiles documentation to demonstrate compliance and good-faith efforts with regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Disseminates disability information and resources to employees and their advocates to ensure understanding of disability rights and responsibilities
  • Consults with employees, disabilities representatives, managers, supervisors, and other campus stakeholders on complex disability-related employment matters and provides solution recommendations according to established policies, laws, and best practices
  • Assist with program development activities
  • Data stewardship:
    Assist with and support data management efforts
  • Develops, delivers, and promotes training programs and resource materials for various stakeholder groups to disseminate accurate information and provide guidance with regards to disability services
Department:

The Employee Disability Resources (EDR) Office, housed within the Office of Human Resources, serves as the university wide resource for employee and job applicant workplace accommodation processes. EDR provides guidance, consultation, education, and referral services to support access and inclusion in compliance with employment-related federal and state reasonable accommodation laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA
- Title I), Rehabilitation Act, Wisconsin Fair Employment Act, and Pregnant Worker's Fairness Act (PWFA). Through this work, EDR helps identify and remove barriers to employment while promoting equitable participation in the workplace. The EDR Office is located on the UW-Madison campus in Madison, Wisconsin. Staff work in a hybrid environment that combines onsite and remote work, with regular onsite presence required to collaborate with colleagues, meet with employees and campus partners, and support the interactive accommodation process.

Compensation:
  • $65,000 (Minimum) depending on qualifications.
  • Actual pay is determined at hire and is based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
  • Two years of work experience providing case management, vocational rehabilitation, or disability services to individuals with an array of disabilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three or more years work experience providing case management, vocational rehabilitation, or disability services to individuals with an array of disabilities.
Education:
  • Required:

    Bachelor's Degree in preferred concentration in Rehabilitation Counseling, Vocational Rehabilitation, Social Work, Counseling or related field
  • Preferred:
    Master's degree in preferred concentration in Rehabilitation Counseling, Vocational Rehabilitation, Social Work, Counseling or related field
