Position: Open Science Implementation Specialist

Job Description

A 1‑year remote contractor opportunity is currently available with the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of Science Quality and Library Services (OSQLS) Knowledge Management (KM) Team. The OSQLS KM team is responsible for a suite of systems that support electronic scientific clearance; a public access repository; content management; and routing of other documents, forms, and plans.

Knowledge Management systems support the CDC’s Centers, Institutes, and Offices (CIOs). The KM team also provides training and guidance on system use to support research and compliance. Among these systems is the publicly available CDC Stacks repository for public health publications and data tailored for public health research, retained indefinitely and available for public health professionals, researchers, and the general public in compliance with federal public access policy and law.

Other systems developed and maintained by the KM team support the scientific research and publishing process and are designed for internal CDC use only. Each of these systems supports CDC’s implementation of Public Access and Open Science (OS). As CDC places greater emphasis on Open Science concepts and practices, the Knowledge Management team has been tasked to lead Open Science implementation.

The KM team would like to add a talented and experienced Open Science expert to their team. The selected candidate will provide support to CDC researchers in creating open science packages that enable replication and support transparency; analyze existing KM systems and recommend enhancements to meet OS goals; and work with the KM Open Science team to rapidly create and provide OS implementation training and guidance to CDC researchers.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborative development and authoring of KM team Open Science training materials and guidelines.
  • Proposing enhancements to KM software systems to improve Open Science practices.
  • Developing and proposing new Open Science workflows.
  • Work with researchers to integrate Open Science principles into their research workflows.
  • Liaise with one or more CDC CIOs and provide OS outreach, instruction, and research support.
  • Provide reference and research support to CDC researchers seeking OS implementation guidance.
  • Collaborate with CDC employees from the Office of Science and other CDC CIOs in the implementation of OS practices.
  • Participate in CDC and other federal open science committees and working groups, as opportunities arise and are appropriate.
Qualifications

Required Experience and/or Knowledge:

  • Master’s degree or Doctorate degree in Library Science, Information Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, academic, and/or global Open Science guidelines and practices (U.S. Public Access policies; the Gold Standard Science memorandum; Open Data policy and law; etc.).
  • Worked with a variety of Open Science tools (DMPTool; Open Science Framework; Git Hub; repository software; data documentation tools; etc.).
  • Excellent communication, training, and documentation creation skills.
  • Expert knowledge of the Persistent Identifier (PID) landscape; experience working in one or more PID assignment interfaces.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a diverse environment.

Preferred Experience and/or Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated federal, state, or academic Open Science leadership experience.
  • Research experience implementing Open Science practices.
  • Created Open Science (or similar) training materials and/or provided such training to practicing researchers.
  • Experience contributing to or maintaining a document, data, or software repository.
