Senior Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Digital Accessibility Remediation Planning & Implementation Support

The Senior SME provides expert consulting support to guide accessibility remediation and implementation efforts across websites, web applications, digital services, and online content. This role focuses on developing remediation plans, prioritizing accessibility issues, supporting development teams with implementation guidance, and advising on accessible design patterns and validation approaches. The SME will partner with cross‑functional stakeholders (design, development, QA, content, and leadership) to ensure remediation approaches are practical, scalable, and aligned with WCAG standards.

Key responsibilities include:

Remediation Planning & Prioritization

  • Convert audit findings and accessibility issue logs into structured remediation plans, backlogs, and prioritized implementation sequencing.
  • Identify repeatable fix patterns to scale remediation across templates, components, and digital properties.
  • Establish remediation workflows and validate implementation readiness across teams.

Accessible Design & UX Support

  • Provide guidance for accessible design patterns, page templates, navigation structures, and user interaction standards.
  • Support development of accessible components and design system enhancements aligned with assistive technology requirements.
  • Review design artifacts (mockups, wireframes, UI specifications) and provide accessibility‑based recommendations.

Technical Implementation Guidance

  • Advise on accessibility implementation practices for HTML/CSS/JavaScript and common UI frameworks.
  • Support development teams with technical recommendations and sample remediation approaches.
  • Participate in working sessions to troubleshoot complex accessibility barriers and recommend solutions.

Validation & Testing Support

  • Provide guidance on validation methods including keyboard testing and assistive technology testing.
  • Review fixes and provide remediation verification notes and conformance guidance documentation.
Required qualifications to be successful in this role:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in digital accessibility consulting and remediation support.
  • Demonstrated expertise in WCAG 2.1 AA / WCAG 2.2 AA
    , Section 508, and practical application of accessibility requirements.
  • Ability to advise technical teams on implementing accessibility remediation and preventing regression.
  • Experience supporting development life cycles, issue tracking, and iterative remediation workflows.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to translate accessibility guidance for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Detail‑oriented, able to work independently, self‑motivated, proactive team player.
  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, human‑centered design, or related field.
  • Ability to function in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment in a fully remote position.
Preferred skills include:
  • Accessibility certifications (e.g., CPACC, WAS, DHS Trusted Tester).
  • Experience with modern design systems and component‑based UI development.
  • Experience with structured accessibility regression testing programs.

SECURITY

CLEARANCE REQUIRED:

Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance. US Citizenship is a requirement for a Public Trust clearance at this location.
