About the RoleThe Senior System Administrator ensures the stable, secure, and optimized operation of in-house computer software systems and network connections supporting the CAGE system of applications and mission capabilities. This role plans, develops, installs, configures, maintains, and optimizes network software, communication links, and enterprise systems across multiple locations.
The position provides senior-level technical leadership in managing, maintaining, and securing critical IT infrastructure (servers, networks, storage) within secure environments, with a focus on high availability, cybersecurity compliance (STIGs/RMF), automation, advanced troubleshooting, and mission readiness. The Senior System Administrator also directs the work of other system administrators and provides mentorship, training, and operational leadership.
Additional Responsibilities Include (not exhaustive):
- Install, configure, operate, and maintain servers, storage systems, and peripherals
- Administer enterprise environments including Active Directory (AD), DNS, DHCP, Group Policy (GPO), and VMware
- Ensure system stability, integrity, availability, and performance for mission-critical functions
- Perform hardware and software upgrades, lifecycle management, and maintenance
- Provide local and remote maintenance support for systems deployed across multiple locations
- Apply and validate DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs)
- Implement and manage security controls, patching, and vulnerability remediation
- Support Risk Management Framework (RMF) documentation, compliance, and accreditation activities
- Monitor for security threats, manage firewalls, and support incident response
- Perform vulnerability management and system hardening activities
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), technical documentation, and network diagrams
- Automate routine administrative tasks using Power Shell, Python, Ansible
, or similar tools - Create, manage, and maintain OS images for system deployment
- Improve system administration efficiency through automated tools and scripting
- Provide advanced Tier 2/3 technical support for complex system issues
- Monitor system performance and capacity (e.g., SCOM)
- Manage backup, recovery, and disaster recovery operations
- Produce technical reports, incident documentation, SITREPs, AARs, and outage reports
- Analyze and resolve end-user software, connectivity, and performance issues
- Direct and coordinate day-to-day activities of system administrators
- Lead system and resource optimization initiatives
- Plan for future hardware/software needs and long-term infrastructure requirements
- Provide technology direction aligned with business and mission objectives
- Collaborate with military, civilian, and contractor stakeholders across functional teams
- Develop and deliver system administrator training and skills assessments
- Provide end-user training when required
- Experience: At least 4 years of hands-on experience installing, configuring, maintaining, and resolving issues with enterprise software systems (OR equivalent combination of education and experience as allowed by contract)
- Education: BA/BS in a technical discipline with at least 10 years of specialized experience, defined as progressive experience in Information Processing disciplines involving diverse hardware/software solutions
