Job Title: Mainframe Modernization Expert

Location: Columbia, MD

Duration: Part-Time (20 hours/ week)

Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Modernization Expert with a solid track record in converting mainframe applications and databases to cloud-hosted, modernized solutions. This role requires deep expertise in mainframe (M/F) systems, hands-on experience with mainframe-to-modern code conversion tools, and a strong understanding of cloud environments and Java-based solutions. The selected candidate will be responsible for analyzing, designing, and implementing migration strategies to transition our mainframe-based systems with minimal downtime and maximum data integrity.

Key Responsibilities:

• Analyze legacy mainframe systems (e.g., COBOL, DB2, stored procedures, BMS Maps, JCL) to identify migration paths, dependencies, and potential risks.
• Migrate or redesign user interface components, including BMS Maps, into modern Java-based front-end frameworks.
• Translate and optimize batch processing components, including JCL-driven jobs, to Java batch frameworks, ensuring equivalent functionality and performance.
• Design and execute a comprehensive migration strategy, prioritizing critical components such as business logic, UI screens, batch processes, and stored procedures.
• Utilize modernization and code conversion tools to facilitate an efficient migration process, ensuring compatibility with modern cloud-hosted solutions.
• Convert or rewrite mainframe DB2 for z/OS stored procedures and schemas to Java-compatible formats or modern database solutions.
• Provide expertise in handling IBM Db2 for z/OS, including schema understanding, data model optimization, and stored procedure integration with COBOL or other mainframe languages.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to maintain business continuity, data integrity, and minimize downtime during migration.
• Leverage cloud platform knowledge (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) to deploy and manage modernized systems in cloud-hosted environments.
• Ensure all migrated applications, UI components, batch processes, and databases are optimized and meet performance requirements in the cloud environment.

Key Qualifications:

• Mainframe and Database Expertise:
  Extensive experience with mainframe applications, including BMS Maps, JCL, and DB2, and deep involvement in end-to-end migration processes.
• Modernization Tools Proficiency:
  Skilled in using code conversion and migration tools to support smooth and efficient transitions to modern architectures.
• Cloud Knowledge:
  Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud and deployment of Java-based solutions.
• DB2 for z/OS:
  Proficient in IBM Db2 for z/OS, with strong knowledge of mainframe DB2 schemas, stored procedures, and experience rewriting them for modern databases.
• Java Understanding:
  Good knowledge of Java, with familiarity in Spring or microservices-based frameworks preferred.

Abilities:

• Analyze and break down legacy components, including BMS Maps, batch JCL jobs, and DB2 entities, to define detailed migration strategies.
• Prioritize migration tasks to focus on critical system components and ensure minimal business disruption.
• Design and implement strategies that ensure data integrity, maintain business continuity, and deliver high performance in the modernized cloud environment.
