Job Summary
The Michigan Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons Quality Collaborative (MSTCVS-QC) is a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) and Blue Care Network (BCN) Collaborative Quality Initiative (CQI) dedicated to improving the care of adult cardiac and general thoracic surgery patients in Michigan. The Quality Collaborative is a consortium of hospitals that work together to promote and share optimal processes of care and implement quality improvement initiatives based on regional and national data, clinical research, and evidence-based cardiac and thoracic surgery practices and guidelines.
We are currently seeking a temporary Database Analyst/Programmer to support the development and integration of data systems for a multi-phase project focused on linking patient-reported outcomes (EQ-5D) with clinical registry data and building interactive dashboards for quality improvement. The Database Analyst/Programmer will have a primary appointment in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Michigan and will report directly to the MSTCVS Program Manager.

Responsibilities*- Design, develop, and maintain secure database systems and web-based applications to support project goals.
- Build and validate data pipelines linking PRO data with STS registry and other MSTCVS data sources.
- Develop and implement ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes for complex datasets.
- Collaborate with statisticians and analysts to ensure data integrity and usability for analysis and reporting.
- Create interactive dashboards integrating PRO, clinical, and demographic data for pilot sites and statewide use.
- Document database architecture, data flows, and programming logic for internal and external audiences.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA and institutional security standards.
- Provide technical support and training for pilot sites on dashboard use and interpretation.
* Education & Experience
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in database programming and data integration; healthcare or clinical data experience preferred.
- Proficiency in SQL and database management tools (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL).
- Experience with ETL processes and data warehouse development.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python (including Num Py, Pandas) and scripting for automation.
- Experience with Power BI as data visualization tools for dashboard development.
- Knowledge of web-based application development and secure data transfer protocols.
- Understanding of relational database design and optimization.
- Ability to manage and integrate multiple data sources, including registry and survey data.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent documentation practices for code and workflows.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and presenting technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Part-time, up to 20 hours/week, Monday-Friday.
- Position is temporary and limited up to two years (24 months).
- Hybrid work environment (onsite and remote) based out of our Ann Arbor, Michigan office.
- Flexible schedule required, with in-office days as needed and availability to attend quarterly Quality Collaborative meetings at various locations across Michigan.
